Review: Sugar Free Jamaica (2013)

For those consumers who want something slightly more exotic than Golazo’s Mango Limon or Mandarina flavors, Jamaica (aka Hibiscus Punch) is definitely a nice option. This product is flavored with what essentially seems to be a fruit punch flavor with a slight floral finish. It’s sweetened with erythritol and stevia, which helps it achieve a 10 calorie, sugar-free formulation. The sweetener has a little bit of an aftertaste, but it’s most certainly better than most sugar-free energy drinks that we’ve sampled. As for its functionality, the product has electrolytes and 100mg of caffeine, but lacks the usual pile of B vitamins and amino acids that you’ll find in the majority of energy drinks. Given all the bad PR out there about mainstream energy drinks, we think that Golazo’s approach of being a “sports energy drink” is a pretty sound one. The packaging for this product is, like the rest of Golazo’s energy drink line, a 12 oz. slim can that they’ve decorated with a white, black, and red (the accent color for this flavor) paint job. The can design is clean and intuitive, with a soccer theme that’s approachable regardless of whether you are a fan or not. It’s a design that definitely looks nice amongst the rest of the Golazo products, but we wish there were some consistency with the color of the Golazo logo across the flavors. Beyond that, the top portion of the can where the flavor name is seems a little large. Nitpicking aside, we think that this a well-executed and enjoyable product that is definitely a nice addition to the Golazo lineup.
