Golazo All Natural Sports Hydration

BevNET Review: Golazo Jamaica, which is the traditional name for a hibiscus agua fresca, is a hibiscus punch flavored sports drink. It features 7 percent coconut water and is very lightly sweetened with sugar and agave. The result is a product that is very light in body, with just a touch of fruit punch flavor and a slight note of hibiscus at the end At 110 calories per bottle, this product is definitely something that won’t weigh you down, but the flavor is right on the edge of tasting watered down. However, it’s still refreshing and thirst quenching, which certainly gives it the chance of being an alternative to a traditional sports drink. As far as the packaging goes, the positioning and emphasis on the words “ALL NATURAL” are a bit obtrusive. Aside from taking your focus away from the product (and putting it on something that is basically just noise at this point), it relegates the logo to being on top of the large indent below the top of the bottle. In addition, the stock “splash” image that’s on the bottle could be removed, allowing more room for the logo and for a larger font size on the flavor name. Otherwise, we like the look of the logo (aside from perhaps the soccer ball) and brand -- they definitely look like something that is geared towards sports. BevNET Review: “Mandarina” is Golazo’s take on the classic orange sports drink. In the case of this product, they’ve added natural electrolytes from added coconut water concentrate (7 percent by volume) and sweetened the drink with sugar and agave. While it certainly doesn’t have the most potassium of any coconut water drink out there, it does have more than a standard sports drink. And, perhaps more importantly for some consumers, it has slightly fewer calories than some of the mainstreams sports drinks out there. Otherwise, the product’s taste is very light, but it still manages to provide a pleasant amount of fruit flavor and a touch of sweetness. The coconut water isn’t something that we really taste at all in this flavor, but there is a touch of saltiness to the finish (which might be from the coconut water or added salt). Packaging definitely looks like that of a sports drink, with a 20 oz. PET bottle that has been almost fully wrapped. The emphasis on the words “all natural” seems a bit excessive, with the brand and flavor name getting second billing. From our perspective, all natural is not the biggest reason that someone will purchase this product. Cleaning up the front panel and trying to develop the brand a bit more would be the logical next steps. Reviewed on: 3/2/2012

BevNET Review: Golazo’s “All Natural Sports Hydration” line includes two citrus oriented flavors, Mango Limon and Limonada. While we understand the need to have four flavors in the line, these two varieties are a bit too similar for us. That said, we’d pick this flavor, Mango Limon, as the better of the two. The flavor is light, refreshing, and enjoyable, with a touch of sweetness behind what otherwise seems to be a standard lime flavor. We don’t really get any mango flavor, but instead the agave and lime give it a slight tart note at the end. The label for this particular flavor uses a less transparent accent color than the others, which makes for a stronger visual presence for the product (we might like to see this on the other flavors). Otherwise, it’s nice looking and easily identifiable as a sports drink. However, we’d lose the green splash that’s in the background and drastically reduce the size of all natural. Overall, an enjoyable product from Golazo that’s definitely a good replacement for a standard sports drink. 3.5 Reviewed on: 3/2/2012
