Honey and Ginseng

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 5 oz can
BevNET Review: The Lemonade with Honey and Ginseng variety of Jack Nicklaus’ Golden Bear Lemonade is a good solid entry into the category. It’s sweetened with a blend of high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, ace-k, and sucralose, which gives the product a very natural level of sweetness but helps cut the calories and sugar content slightly. Using lemon and pear juices, the product has a pretty nice lemon flavor that is balanced rather than overly sour. The honey isn’t something that we taste, although it is certainly something that doesn’t hurt from a marketability point of view. On the outside, we’re still not completely sold on the use of Jack Nicklaus and Golden Bear as the two brands that sell this drink, although it certainly looks and feels somewhat like their successful Arnold Palmer brand (at least in the sense that it has an old golfer on it). However, it doesn’t quite whet the appetite the same way and feels a bit forced. Still, the product inside the can is a pretty solid mainstream lemonade and we’re sure that this product will do well given the right retail placement and price point (two things that AriZona is very good at).Reviewed on: 6/1/2012

Strawberry

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 23 oz Can
BevNET Review: Unlike the Mango flavor, the Strawberry flavor of Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Lemonade does actually taste like a lemonade. With a flavor that one might typically call “pink lemonade,” this variety has a nice amount of tart and sour to it, but the level of sweetness is definitely quite strong. The formulation uses high fructose corn syrup, honey, sucralose, and ace-k, which helps cut some of the calories while still giving the product a very natural sweetness (we didn’t taste the sweeteners at all). As far as the packaging is concerned, the massive 23 oz. can is a bit much. Furthermore, the naming convention, which includes both Jack Nicklaus and Golden Bear Lemonade seems a bit confusing and is a mouthful to say. Plus, the demographic that is likely to drink this product probably isn’t old enough to remember Jack Nicklaus as an athlete. Yes, it worked for Arnold Palmer, but his name, which is synonymous with the mixture of lemonade and tea, isn’t something that this drink benefits from. Overall, it’s a decent product, but it’s hard to see this being anything big.Reviewed on: 4/11/2012

Mango

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 23 oz Can
BevNET Review: The Mango flavor of Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Lemonade is a sweet and slightly syrupy beverage that tastes more like an “orange mango” beverage than it does a flavored lemonade. We find little to no lemonade flavor in this can, although lemon juice from concentrate is, in fact, an ingredient. Otherwise, the drink has a four-sweetener blend of high fructose corn syrup, honey (maybe a tie in with Golden Bear?), sucralose, and acesulfame potassium. This gives the product a very sweet flavor profile but keeps the calories at 80 and sugar at 18g per serving (triple that if you drink the whole can). All in all, what’s inside the can really isn’t lemonade to us -- it’s just a juice cocktail. Adding more lemon flavor is a must in our opinion. On the outside, this product feels very much like a copycat of AriZona’s Arnold Palmer drinks. Since it’s the same company producing both drinks, this probably isn’t an issue for AriZona. However, the difference of appeal between Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer is quite big -- Jack Nicklaus doesn’t have a trademark beverage. Overall, this is an average tasting drink which would be much better if it actually tasted more like a lemonade, but we’re skeptical of the Jack Nicklaus name inspiring consumers to purchase this drink.Reviewed on: 4/11/2012
