BevNET Review: Grand Ma Ma’s Sweet Southern Tea is named for former NBA Allstar Larry Johnson, who gained the nickname from a Converse commercial in the 1990’s. Why this is being put on a tea more than a decade later is a bit of an enigma to us. In any event, the tea is Southern style sweet tea, which uses a mixture of water, black tea, sugar, and phosphoric acid (a cheaper and more controversial alternative to citric acid). The flavor is fairly straightforward, with black tea and loads of sugar being the only flavors in the drink. That said, this is a product that can be found under many other brand names, so Grand Ma Ma’s really doesn’t bring anything new to the table. Packaging is a stock 20 oz. PET bottle, which has a sloppy and rushed looking label. It’s hard to imagine someone picking this up over the many other more polished looking products that directly compete with it (Tradewinds and Sweet Leaf to name two). Plus, having only two varieties (this one and sugar free) is going to compound the problem. Overall, Grand Ma Ma’s Sweet Southern Tea has significant room for improvement. Reviewed on: 9/30/2011
