Providing 30g of protein per 16.9 oz. container, the G Series Pro Recover formulation is a well-executed effort to extend the Gatorade brand into the protein drink category. Unlike most mainstream protein drinks, this product uses neither whey nor soy protein and does not use artificial sweeteners. Instead, it uses milk protein isolate and is sweetened with sugar, which, at least from a flavor perspective, pays big dividends. It’s sweet and creamy flavor tastes just like strawberry milk – with no sweetener or functional aftertaste. Beyond the hefty dose of protein, the product has calcium, carbohydrates, potassium, and sodium, all for the purposes of aiding “post-game recovery.” Packaging has an aggressive vibe to it, especially in comparison to the core G Series line. Part of this is brought about by the switch to a Tetra Pak container with a screw top, which gives the product more of a supplement feel than the G Series PET bottles. This, combined with the darker color packaging, helps establish a more serious vibe to the product. However, they could certainly trim down the text on the package -- it feels a bit cluttered. Overall, Gatorade has done a nice job of creating something that feels innovative and unique rather than “me-too.” Definitely worth a try.
