BevNET Review: Guayaki’s Traditional Mate not only provides a nice kick of natural caffeine, but it delivers a very enjoyable flavor that should, at this stage in the game, have mainstream appeal. Mildly sweetened with organic cane juice and flavored with a splash of lemon juice, this product has a mellow mate flavor that’s smooth from start to finish. They’ve done a nice job of making a formula that shows how mate can be an alternative to tea by delivering what’s effectively their take on tea with lemon. This USDA Organic product is so gulpable that halfway through the bottle we were completely hooked. On the packaging front, they’ve created something that’s earthy and authentic, yet easy to read and identify with their trademark yellow color. Overall, a great product that sets the stage for the rest of the brand – and the bar for the rest of the category.

As good a mate as I've had... from a bottle

The aroma that BevNET has described as "burning rubber" is the grassy bitterness of the mate, and I find to be quite enjoyable, if not the best part of this tea. It is nothing like burning rubber, but sweet botanicals. The taste isn't quite what I am used to as a yerba mate drinker, but I do not think that a bottled beverage can replicate that, so I am judging this on its own. I enjoyed this more after adding sugar to my taste. I like mate bitter, but this one was better sweeter. I am an avid yerba mate drinker, and I think that mate should be drank straight from the gourd (the traditional way). There is a picture of the traditional gourd on the bottle to let you know that they know how it should be served. The reason that people brew their own tea is that it just isn't the same out of the bottle. This gets bonus points for being fair trade, USDA organic, and kosher. It is interesting to note that I did not become jittery, but alert after consuming this, nor is my heart racing (I am sensitive to caffeine). There could be some truth to the claim that the mate balances out the caffeine.
