Hoist

Hoist

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Hoist was created for anybody that enjoys an active social life, and also likes to wake up and work hard the next day. Hoist was formulated with one thought in mind: rapid rehydration. Since the leading cause of a hangover is dehydration, Hoist has twice the amount of electrolytes as an average sports drink and is designed to help you feel better faster after a night of alcohol consumption, by providing hydration at the moment when you need it most. Hoist can be consumed before, during or after an evening of drinking to fight off dehydration and it also tastes great as a mixer.

Strawberry Lemonade

Product Type:Sports Drinks: Sports Drink; Container: 12oz Plastic
BevNET Review: The Strawberry Lemonade variety of Hoist was our preferred flavor of the two varieties that we sampled. The product, which is sweetened with crystalline fructose and stevia, has good amount of sweetness and only 10 grams of sugar per 12 oz. bottle. The strawberry lemonade flavor tastes very much like a sports drink, which is the result of it having a slightly salty finish. It’s definitely a very drinkable flavor and it definitely quenches your thirst. Otherwise, it’s hard to really compare the efficacy of this product’s electrolyte content versus others, but the drink contains 300mg of sodium and 120mg of potassium on its nutrition facts panel. Visually, the 12 oz. bottle seems much better than the can that the product was previously in (it looked too much like an energy drink). Still, there’s something about this product that feels ambiguous, with the small size and “Hoist” name not feeling like it’s trying to be a sports drink (which is really the closest category to “rehydration” and likely where this brand fits). That said, we’re not convinced that the current branding and packaging is where it needs to be in order for this product to realize its full potential. Still, it’s a step forward and we’re glad to see that the company behind it is willing to change. Overall, an enjoyable product, but it feels like its niche is still a bit too limited. Hoist

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Hoist is a rehydration beverage targeting (according to the front of the can) consumers who plan on drinking and will, more than likely, end up dehydrated the next day. For their freshmen effort they’ve created a non-carbonated apple flavored formula enhanced with more electrolytes than your typical sports drink. Each can has 90 calories and 22g of sugar, as well as 120mg of potassium, 380mg of sodium, and 8 percent RDA of phosphorous. It’s not a bad tasting drink, but the apple style flavor doesn’t seem like the best choice for the target demographic, especially since it’s reminiscent of a kids’ drink. Otherwise, it’s certainly a thirst quenching product, thanks to the added electrolytes. However, with other rehydration and recovery products (such as coconut water and Code Blue) offering more to their formulations, we wonder if Hoist shouldn’t have a bit more to their own functional formula. On the exterior, you’ve got a brand that looks and feels very much like an energy drink. One easy fix to this would be to move the phrase “rapid rehydration” to the front in place of the more ambiguous “feel better faster” text. Lastly, there’s the treatment of the brand name “Hoist”, which, in the absence of some sort of tag line on the front of the can, fails to get us excited or understand what the product is. Overall, the product is conceptually a good idea, but the execution of what’s inside the can and how it’s visually presented on the outside are in need of some work. Reviewed on: 12/17/2009
