Jones Soda’s Birthday Cake Soda is a limited-edition variety that was designed to commemorate the brand’s 20th anniversary. Since it’s also BevNET’s 20th anniversary and Jones Soda was one of the first startup brands that we covered, we figured it was appropriate to give this a try. From a taste perspective, it tastes like a liquid version of boxed cake mix and canned frosting. That being said, it’s sweet and creamy tasting and has that not-so-natural butter taste that you’ll find in packaged cake mix. And this stuff, which clocks in at 160 calories and 42g of sugars, is about as unadulterated as it gets when it comes to a bottle of soda. However, having tried Jones Soda’s countless limited edition flavors, including Turkey & Gravy and “Sweat” (which is quite possibly the worst tasting bottled beverage ever), we appreciate that the company has created something that is quite drinkable. While birthday cake-flavored foods had their day a few years back, there’s something about it being used in soda form that seems clever and creative. All in all, this is clearly a novelty product, but, unlike some of Jones' efforts in the past, this one actually seems as though it might help enhance the brand and give it a little boost in terms of its relevance.
