Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

SEATTLE -- Jones Soda Co. (the "Company" or "Jones") (OTC:JSDA) (TSX VENTURE:JSD) announced that it will launch a new line of organic teas in the second quarter of 2005. The new line will be called Jones Organics and will offer six tea flavors: Strawberry White Tea, Cherry White Tea, Berry Green Tea, Mandarin Green Tea, Tropical Red Tea and Peach Red Tea. Red Tea Peach

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: Jones Soda is obviously using quality ingredients in its Jones Organic teas but, despite using less sugar than most other RTD teas, the peach flavor tastes overpowered by the organic sugar that is sweetening it. Rooibus, the red tea used in the mix, is normally a pretty distinct flavor, but the tea gets slightly washed under the sweetness and whatever peach taste there is. On the other hand, the 14-oz. glass bottle looks great, subtle and stripped-down, with a simple outline of a peach and nice Jones Organics lettering. On the whole, though, this product is worth a try if you are looking for an RTD tea that's less sweet than the masses or if you’ve simply got to go organic.Reviewed on: 5/19/2005

Green Tea Mandarin

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: This green tea suffers from its lack of tea flavor; the sugar used in the mix leaves just enough room for a hint of citrus, but beyond that the flavors are somewhat difficult to distinguish. On the one hand, it is nice that the product doesn't taste grassy, but on the other hand the sweetness is just too strong for this product's otherwise delicate body. Yes, it has less sugar than many competing products in the RTD tea category, but for some reason the taste of the sugar is just too strong relative to the green tea flavor. The fact that it's organic is a plus, but that alone will not motivate repeat buys. However, they do have a gift for packaging over at Jones, and this product is no exception -- it's clean, simple and attractive. The combination of good packaging and an organic formula is a step in the right direction for Jones -- and will ultimately help make this product a success. Overall, a good effort that would be much improved with just the slightest tweak to the flavor.Reviewed on: 5/19/2005

Red Tea Tropical

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: Jones has managed to combine tropical fruit punch with organic organic iced tea. Going in, we wouldn’t think this is a great idea unless you can taste the tea. Surprise! You can. And looking at the label, you see why: they used a little less sugar in this flavor than in their other Jones Organic teas. The rooibos tea, when allowed to escape that sweetness that the Jones folks like so much, is a nice match for the fruity tropical flavors. While we’d like to see everything scaled back and even more tea flavor, at least they’re on the right track here. Worth a try for red tea fans.Reviewed on: 5/18/2005

Green Tea Berry

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: Not a lot of Berry flavor in this Jones Organic offering, but the green tea does appear amidst this sweet beverage. There isn’t any complexity to the taste – just sugar, green tea, and a very light hint of berry flavor – in that order. All in a nice-looking bottle with an attractive label. Worth a try for those of you that like a simple green tea that's definitely on the sweet side. Fortunately for Jones, this represents a large number of people in this country -- basically anyone who used to consume Snapple or AriZona style products but wants a healthier less caloric product. Combine the organic formulation with the sweet flavor and this is an extremely timely offering from Jones.Reviewed on: 5/19/2005

White Tea Cherry

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: This is an interesting flavor in that the cherry is fairly prominent in the mix, and the white tea escapes the sugary cloud Jones uses in its organic line. There’s also a nice cherry scent and aftertaste, and the strength of the flavor provides a nice contrast to the mildness of the white tea. It’s great that the brewmasters at Jones gave them the room to do this dance, although too bad that they’re doing it while sugar rains from the rooftops. Still, the product is not as sweet as the likes other mainstream RTD teas and the fact that it's organic gives the product additional market appeal. As far the packaging goes, the cherries on the simple label are attractive and the use of the word "organics" is very prominently placed. Overall, a uniquely flavored white tea that is definitely worth trying.Reviewed on: 5/18/2005

White Tea Strawberry

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 fl oz glass (414 ml)
BevNET Review: Jones Soda has managed to allow a tiny bit of delicate white tea flavor to escape its sugary clutches in this formulation, and that, combined with a realistic strawberry flavor, makes for a great tasting RTD iced tea. While its taste definitely got a heavy hand with the sugar, the product does have less sugar than most mainstream sweet-teas on the market today. In addition, it is hard to get strawberry right and they’ve got a pretty good version of it here, resulting in a very natural tasting product. Combined with the simple Jones Organic label, it’s definitely a product that is worth trying -- especially if you are someone that is interested in the benefits of white tea, but not the taste of it.
