Traditional Kombucha

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.4 oz can
BevNET Review: Kombucha Wonder Drink “Traditional” is a pasteurized kombucha product that comes packaged in an 8 oz. can. It’s rather sweet tasting, despite having only 60 calories, but it still manages to have a very authentic kombucha flavor. There’s a tea note to the base, followed by the distinct flavor of fermented tea, which is rounded out nicely by the product’s natural carbonation. Unlike some of the other products out there (or homebrewed versions) this product uses pasteurization to make it shelf stable and kill off the alcohol that is produced during fermentation. According to the manufacturer, the benefits of kombucha (assuming you believe that there are some) come in the form of acids that are created during fermentation and these acids are not affected by pasteurizing the product. Ultimately, we like the drink’s flavor – it’s a nice, sophisticated alternative to still tea. On the outside, they’ve done a nice job of presenting something that’s artisanal looking and appealing to the eye. It's chic, but feels credible, and we like the packaging differentiation by using a can. Overall, a very enjoyable product.Reviewed on: 7/2/2010

Asian Pear and Ginger

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.4 oz can
BevNET Review: Asian Pear & Ginger appears to be the only true remnant of the original lineup, but it seems much improved over the original version than we remember. There's a very pleasant note of pear that hits you upon sampling the drink, which also helps moderate the fermented flavor of the kombucha. In addition, there's an enjoyably nutty note from the oolong tea before it finishes off with a lightly sweet carbonated finish. Packaging is clean and attractive, giving off premium and sophisticated vibes. Overall, our favorite flavor of the lineup -- and possibly the most drinkable kombucha drink we've had to date.Reviewed on: 7/2/2010

Green Tea & Lemon

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.4oz Can
BevNET Review: Of all of Kombucha Wonder Drink flavors, the Green Tea & Lemon variety is definitely the most marketable of the bunch. The simple reason is that the pairing of green tea, kombucha, lemon, and sugar makes for a flavor that’s a not-so-distant cousin of the classic mixture of black tea and lemon. The addition of fermented flavor and carbonation give the product a sophisticated feeling that’s definitely a nice change of pace compared to still tea. The fermented flavor is actually rather mild, at least in comparison to raw or home-brewed kombucha products. And of course, there’s the health aspect, which is ultimately why kombucha products have become so popular. Since this product is shelf stable, it’s pasteurized, which means that it lacks the live probiotic content found in raw kombucha products. But it also lacks the alcohol that got so many of those drinks pulled from the shelves. While we’re not trying to make a statement on the efficacy of kombucha, we will tell you that Kombucha Wonder Drink claims that the key acids in kombucha (the ones that provide the supposed health benefits) are not impacted by pasteurization. On the outside, we like the product’s 8 oz. can, which, thanks to the success of energy drinks, has a naturally functional vibe to it. It’s clean and chic, with a bilingual English and French package (presumably for going into Canada). Overall, a very well-executed product.Reviewed on: 7/2/2010

Essence of Lemon

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 14 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Essence of Lemon is another fine flavor from Kombucha Wonder Drink. In this case, the added lemon extract and sugar (in the form of organic cane juice) complement the kombucha flavor nicely, while added green tea helps give the drink a somewhat familiar flavor. The use of carbonation also helps, giving the drink a light feeling in your mouth. Added yeast & bacteria cultures are certainly a plus, but they are missing out by not promoting the benefits on the front of the drink. Otherwise, the "fermented" aspect of the drink is something that will only appeal to consumers who already know what kombucha is. Still, if you are a kombucha fan -- or someone that has wanted to like it -- this is a well formulated drink to try.Reviewed on: 8/27/2008

Essence of Peach

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 14 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Well, one of the flavors had to be our least favorite and this is, unfortunately, the one. Specifically, we found the flavor of the peach to be a bit washed out to the point where you can't tell what it is. This is further complicated by the use of rooibos tea, which lacks the earthy flavor found in the oolong and green tea varieties. Otherwise, the exterior of the drink is attractive, offering a well designed 14 ounce slim bottle with a twist off top. Still, without flavor improvements, we'd stick with one of the other flavors. Asian Pear Ginger

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.4oz Can
BevNET Review: For some reason that we cannot articulate, we picked this flavor first as it had the most appealing sounding flavor. The wordy names, which are buried in small type at the bottom of the bottle, are somewhat difficult to distinguish. Even the color palate that they've used to distinguish the varieties isn't terribly broad. The little bottle feels cute, but it didn't really spark curiosity. The flavor, on the other hand, is something you will not soon forget. The base of this product is fermented tea (aka "Kombucha") which has a flavor that tastes spoiled or rotten. There's a mild fruit sweetness, but it doesn’t cover the flavor of the fermented tea. Plus, there's a nasty aftertaste that is very difficult to get out of your mouth. Overall, we didn't think too highly of this product. It seems like the type of product that will appeal to a natural/health consumer who believes that this fermented taste must mean that it's good for you. Otherwise Kombucha Wonder Drink's Asian Pear Ginger is not a pleasant beverage to drink in its current form. Our suggestion would be to increase the ginger and pear flavors to wash out the fermented flavor. Until then, this is a very niche product.Reviewed on: 6/12/2006

+ Show Product ReviewHimalayan Blend

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.5 fl oz glass (252 ml)
BevNET Review: Kombucha again misses the mark with this product. The lemon flavor does not hide the fermented flavor and, as a result, leaves a flavor that is quite difficult to drink. Using an organic formulation is a plus, but it didn't help us get this product down. If they could kick up the lemon flavor and turn down the fermented flavor, we think that we'd like this beverage. Maybe the market will prove us wrong, but this seems like a product that a) is new to the American consumer and b) doesn't have a taste that appeals to the American consumer. Those two things mean that this product is going to have a very hard time getting traction. A well done product from a technical point of view, but it really fails in basic drinkability. Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.5 fl oz glass (252 ml)
BevNET Review: Citrus notes and oolong tea are what this combination uses and it's actually close to being palatable. Again, KWD let the fermented flavor get out of control, leaving the product with an aftertaste that will definitely not make us go back for more. The hint of orange is good, but there's not enough. If they could just pump it up, this would actually be a good beverage.Reviewed on: 7/19/2006

+ Show Product ReviewJasmine Niagara Grape

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.5 fl oz glass (252 ml)
BevNET Review: Maybe jasmine tea ferments better than oolong or green tea or maybe it's just our imagination that this product is the most drinkable of the lineup. The fermented flavor seems a bit more mild, which is a major advantage over the other varieties, and the grape flavor gives this product a mild, pleasant fruit finish. Its organic certification is a plus, but it's something that can be easily missed by the consumer as it's only found at the bottom of the label. Overall, this is still a niche concept, but definitely the best of the bunch.Reviewed on: 6/12/2006

Product Type:Tea: Kombucha; Container: 8.5 fl oz glass (252 ml)
BevNET Review: The fifth and final flavor of this brand is rooibos and red peach. Unfortunately, this flavor has the same issues as most of the others: too much fermented flavor. The peach is almost impossible to taste over it. Needs major work for us to be able to consume more than a shot of this product.Reviewed on: 6/12/2006
