Mango

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 9.3oz Glass
BevNET Review: Mango and aloe are pretty compatible flavors and Leaf Up’s Aloe Juice definitely sees the benefits of this. This variety pairs aloe vera gel, puree, and powder along with mango puree and flavoring for the basis of its flavor. It’s been sweetened with sugar and honey, with the product having 23g of sugar and 110 calories (although there’s a technical issue with their nutrition facts panel that says a serving size of “1 cup / 9.3 fl oz”). Added vitamins (vitamin C, B vitamins) are nice, but not really a selling point for what is basically a juice drink for refreshment purposes. Our only issue with what’s inside the bottle is the drink’s finish, which is a bit too heavy on the aloe. More mango would probably address this. On the design front, the glass bottle has a premium look to it that is often lacking from the often commoditized-looking plastic bottles that litter the aloe category. However, there are some flaws in the design. Most notably are their treatment of the brand name and front of bottle text (on top of the mango image) that’s virtually unreadable. We’d like to see the text issue cleaned up and it made more clear as to what the brand name is. Overall, a good start, but not quite there yet. Reviewed on: 10/4/2012

Pomegranate

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 9.3oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the three flavors of Leaf Up Aloe Juice that we sampled, this one was our favorite. There are two reasons behind this. First, the addition of pomegranate juice and flavor helps cut the slightly overwhelming aloe finish that we found in the other two varieties. What you have in this particular product is a balanced mix of aloe and fruit flavors, with small chunks of pulp throughout. Second, pomegranate is a marketable and familiar flavor that we think will pull better than mango (especially given that this one has a more balanced flavor). Visually, we like the look of the squat 9.3 oz. glass bottle and find it to be a nice alternative to the plastic packaging that’s become so common for this category. However, we’re still confused about their treatment of the brand name (is it “leaf up” or “Aloe Juice”?). Furthermore, the text that they’ve placed on top of the pomegranate image is almost unreadable since the colors are similar and it is on top of a busy graphic. Overall, enjoyable flavor, but a few design oversights get in the way of this product being what it needs to be. Reviewed on: 10/4/2012

Original

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 9.3 Glass
BevNET Review: The Original variety of Leaf Up’s Aloe Juice is, as far as other aloe vera juice products that we’ve sampled go, a clean and straightforward tasting product. It has a blend of aloe vera gel, aloe vera powder, aloe vera puree, white grape concentrate, sugar, honey, added vitamins, and a few other ingredients. It’s slightly lighter in body than some of the other products out there, which is definitely a plus, although there’s a little too much grape flavor to it. Packaging is the biggest point of differentiation, with a small 9.3 oz. bottle being a nice alternative to some of the larger plastic bottles out there. Given aloe’s sugar and caloric content, this is definitely something that could make this product stand out. Visually, we like the design that they’ve created from an aesthetic point of view, but it’s confusing as to what the brand name actually is. There’s a large round circle that says “Aloe Juice” and small text that says “leaf up.” Adjusting the visuals so that there’s no doubt would certainly be helpful. Overall, we like what they’ve done, but some adjustments to the flavor and label design would take it further.Reviewed on: 10/4/2012
