BevNET Review: If it’s a cane sugar sweetened mainstream cola that you’re after, then Maine Root’s Mexicane Cola is definitely a solid choice. With what seems to be an intentional play on the cult like following of Mexican Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Maine Root has incorporated Mexico into both the name and color (which mimics the flag of Mexico). From a taste perspective, it’s spot on, with a mainstream cola flavor that certainly rivals the big guys'. On the packaging front, we think that the combination of Mexico and Maine seem to clash – there should be some way to better marry the cola with the brand’s strong grounding in Maine. Furthermore, the product’s color scheme does seem a little out of synch with the muted tones of the rest of their products – particularly on the 4-pack boxes we saw. Overall, this is a very good cola and a welcome addition to the Maine Root line, but we feel like it might be better if they somehow managed to marry the brand’s Maine origin with the notion of a pure sugar cola.
