Nawgan

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Nawgan is an all-natural brain fitness beverage. Developed by a University Professor/brain scientist and backed by clinical trial data, Nawgan is "what to drink when you want to think". Nawgan is available in caffeinated and noncaffeinated versions. The caffeinated version contains as much natural caffeine as a cup of coffee. Both versions are low in calories (30 per can) and sodium and contain no artificial ingredients. Nawgan received the Silver award for Best Functional Beverage in 2010 by Beverage World Magazine. Lemonade

Product Type:Functional: Energy Supplement; Container: 11.5oz can
BevNET Review: Nawgan’s Lemonade flavor is a big step forward for the brand, both in terms of flavor and packaging. Starting with the flavor, this non-carbonated product is extremely enjoyable, with a zero calorie formulation (sweetened with ace-k, sucralose, and stevia) that has almost no aftertaste. The lemonade flavor is refreshing and can definitely hold its own against reduced calorie lemonades that don’t even have any functional ingredients. Functionality hasn’t really shifted since we first took a look at Nawgan, with caffeine, B vitamins and Cognizin (citocoline). The latter provides the focus and “alertness” functions that the drink is primarily focused on. Still, the caffeine is really the immediate benefit of this product and with 100mg of it, it should perform pretty well. Visually, the package has been refined over its first incarnation, with biggest improvement being the removal of the Cognizin logo from the front of the can (which was way too pharmaceutical sounding). In its place, they’ve added “alertness beverage” under the logo, which seems like a subtle way to make the point of the functionality. Otherwise, we like the color palate that they’ve chosen for this flavor -- it feels modern and upbeat. At this point, our only suggestion with the design is to make more prominent mention of the caffeine content (especially since there are loads of consumers going to the beverage cooler seeking caffeine). Moving the “What to drink...” line and putting a callout in its place would be an option. Overall, we really like what they’ve created and where they are heading with this product. Tarocco Orange

Product Type:Other; Container: 8 oz Can
BevNET Review: The latest extension to the Nawgan line of Cognizin enhanced beverages is “Tarocco Orange," which is a caffeinated and non-carbonated formulation. Tarocco, which is a blood orange variety from Italy, is an overly ambitious way to name this product since it neither tastes like blood orange (it’s more like grapefruit) nor contains any blood orange juice. The latter is particularly important since it begs the question as to why they chose to be so specific with the flavor name (“Blood Orange” would be better). Otherwise, the product is fairly pleasant to drink, with a fruity flavor and only a moderate amount of stevia to the finish (since it has sugar as well). Adding carbonation would likely make the product more palatable while a more accurate blood orange flavor would also be a good idea. Functionally, the product contains Cognizin (citocoline), caffeine, and 50% RDA of vitamin E. The can is a standard 250 ml can, which is synonymous with the energy drink category. The color and artwork are well executed, although the Cognizin logo that’s on the front feels somewhat out of place, especially since this product is not labeled as a supplement. This also means that there’s no detail on the Cognizin content, including how many milligrams are contained and what its function is (aside from a few loose statements). Overall, this is a good addition to the line, but both the flavor and positioning could be tightened up. Reviewed on: 4/4/2011

Nawgan Berry with Caffeine

Product Type:Functional: Energy Supplement; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: Nawgan’s other Berry formulation is a caffeine-enhanced version of their original formulation. With its added 100mg of natural caffeine, this product is effectively a relatively strong energy drink. (Red Bull contains about 80mg of caffeine in a serving). Functionally, you’ve also got the “memory and thinking” functions, which are the same as the non-caffeinated Berry variety of Nawgan. However, the added energy function comes at the expense of flavor, with a noticeable caffeine note in both the body and finish. It’s certainly not intolerable, but it’s a step down from its counterpart. On the packaging front, it’s not instantly obvious what the difference between the two products is, which is the result of a using color to designate the caffeine content rather than a flavor difference and instead placing it in smallish text on the lower portion of the front panel. Moving the caffeine content (or even labeling it an energy drink) to where the flavor name is would likely be the simplest way to remedy this. Overall, we think that the addition of caffeine adds to the marketability of the product, but making the flavor a bit more drinkable and calling out the caffeine would help make it an even better product. Nawgan Berry Caffeine Free

Product Type:Functional: Energy Supplement; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: Nawgan is a drink that’s designed to support memory and thinking. Flavor-wise, the latest version of this non-carbonated product is an improvement over the original. Now sweetened with a blend of sugar and stevia, the product has an increased level of sweetness but maintains its 25 calorie profile. This helps make the berry flavor more pronounced and makes for an overall improved drinking experience. From a functionality point of view, the product is designed to help “sharpen the mind” with added lycopene (for anti-inflammatory properties), vitamin E (antioxidant), citicoline (Kyowa Cognizin brand), and alpha-glyceryl phosphoryl choline. Looking at the exterior of the can, the design is clean and easy to read, with the product’s purpose placed smack in the middle of the front panel. That text, paired with the name and image of the brain, are pleasing to the eye and clever, which certainly makes it a memorable design. The “created by a clinical scientist” badge might help with credibility, assuming consumers actually see it and read it. However, since they’ve added a caffeine enhanced berry flavor to the lineup, it seems like adding a larger callout to which flavor has and doesn’t have caffeine would be helpful. Still, this is a big step in the right direction for Nawgan.Reviewed on: 3/23/2010

Nawgan - Berry

Product Type:Functional: Energy Supplement; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: Nawgan, which is initially only available in berry flavor, is a drink that’s designed to support memory and thinking. Flavor-wise, this non-carbonated product tastes much different that we expected it would. The product is formulated with sugar (turbinado to be precise), but has only 25 calories, which means that the level of sweetness is extremely light. In fact, there isn’t a whole heck of a lot of flavor in this thing at all, with the berry flavor having an almost unsweetened taste. It’s not bad, but not overly satisfying either. From a functionality point of view, the product has lycopene (for anti-inflammatory properties), vitamin E (antioxidant), and alpha-glyceryl phosphoryl choline (to help with memory and thinking skills). Lastly, we’re not sure that they should be in an 8 oz. can as it might be mistaken for an energy drink (that’s what we thought it was). Overall, we like the design of the Nawgan brand and the concept, but we think that it is going to be a tough sell with the product’s weak flavor and non-immediate functionality. Fixing the former would probably be the first, and easier, thing to devote some attention to. Reviewed on: 5/26/2009
