Hot Fuel Fruit Punch

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 24 oz resealable PET with lugnut cap
BevNET Review: Nitrous Express’ “Hot Fuel” variety is a fruit punch-flavored energy drink enhanced with quercetin, caffeine, and vitamins. The highly carbonated formulation has a consistency reminiscent of dairy. The added thickness and the sugar used to sweeten the product give it a nice tangy bite that’s enjoyable to drink. Functionally, the product relies on quercetin and caffeine, with 240mg of the latter per 24 oz. bottle. Quercetin, which they’ve billed on the front of the bottle, is also added for energy benefits. However, unlike caffeine, this is not something that’s easily to evaluate, especially when it comes to the product having the “crashproof” abilities boasted on the drink’s label. In any event, it makes for a nice call out, especially as quercetin has a naturally functional sound. Visually, the product offers a nice alternative to NOS, the only other brand using this type of bottle. And since NOS has had success with it, there’s no shame in Nitrous Express trying to create their own version of it. The label is colorful and edgy, with a hexagonal twist cap. While it’s immediately identifiable as an energy drink, the flavor name, in small text in the bottom right, could be a bit more prominent. Overall, this product is one of the better large format energy drinks that we’ve tried, especially with its unique flavor and ingredients. Reviewed on: 4/22/2010

Lean & Mean Mango Citrus

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 24 oz resealable PET, with lugnut cap
BevNET Review: The Lean & Mean variety of Nitrous Express is the lone sugar free flavor of the Nitrous Oxide lineup. In place of sugar, the product uses a sucralose and acesulfame potassium blend, which achieves a calorie and sugar free formulation with minimal aftertaste. The product is otherwise identical to the Speed Freak variety, complete with a pleasant sweet and sour tropical fruit flavor that the company calls “mango citrus.” The functional blend includes 80mg of caffeine per serving (240mg per bottle), 250mg of pure quercetin, and 250mg of vitamin C (417% RDA). With that amount of caffeine, there’s definitely some kick to the product, while the added quercetin is certainly going to take some further explanation and education. That’s okay – especially when the product should be effective based on the caffeine alone. On the outside, they could do a bit more to call attention to this being a low calorie offering, and placing the flavor more prominently would be good. Otherwise, this is a solid low calorie offering. Reviewed on: 4/22/2010

Speed Freak Mango Citrus

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 24 oz resealable PET, with lugnut cap
BevNET Review: Speak Freak, which is the brand’s “mango citrus” flavor, is a caffeine and quercetin enhanced energy drink. The flavor is sweet and sour, with a candy like fruit note a light bite to the finish. The cloudy green liquid has a rather high amount of carbonation to it. All in all, it’s a very drinkable and unique tasting product. Functionally, the products has 80mg of caffeine per serving (240mg per bottle), 250mg of pure quercetin, and 250mg of vitamin C (417% RDA). There’s some definite kick to the product, especially if you consume more than the allotted 8 ounces per serving. Packaging is a big, 24 oz. bottle with a cap shaped like a hex nut. The silver backed label is shiny, with aggressive graphics clearly aimed at males and auto enthusiasts who might already be familiar with the Nitrous Express brand (they make nitrous oxide systems). The front panel is clean and catches the eye, although we’d like to see the flavor name more prominently placed on the label. Overall, a well rounded product that balances flavor, function, and packaging.Reviewed on: 4/22/2010
