Billed as “fortified eye care nectar,” Ojo starts off with a formulation that utilizes 50 percent juice, including white grape, pear, and orange juices. The first two are likely to provide natural sugar and to boost the overall juice content that can be listed on the label – you otherwise can’t taste them in the mix. The orange juice provides a substantial amount of the drink’s flavor, while added cranberry flavoring provides the other portion of the drink’s namesake. It’s a pretty sweet tasting product, with the a fruit flavor that’s reminiscent of a children’s juice drink (e.g. Hi-C). Functionally, the product contains a variety of ingredients that have been shown to help with eye health, including lutein, EPA, DHA, zeaxanthin, copper, zinc, vitamins, and fruit extracts. While we can’t tell you how well this product works, it’s definitely a function that we haven’t previously seen in a beverage product. That being said, it’s definitely an innovative product. However, we question whether or not a 50 percent juice product that contains 22g of sugar and 100 calories (per 8 ounces) is the proper delivery method (we suspect that the target demographic is calorie and sugar conscious and that this product will likely sell best in the drug channel to start). Packaging is an 8 oz. PET bottle, which features a play on an eye chart. They’ve done a nice job of making it obvious that this is a product for your eyes, but the variation between the three flavors (currently a small bar at the bottom of the label) should definitely be improved upon. Overall, the concept is very innovative and the package design is clever, but what’s inside the bottle, while tasty, seems slightly out of sync with the rest of the concept.
