Update Information for This Brand

Manufacturer's Brand Overview: [Edit]
OOBA, the world’s first sparkling hibiscus beverage, is rich in the ancient healing power of hibiscus—a powerhouse of antioxidants. The ruby red color of this drink is all from the hibiscus extract. OOBA is now available in six delicious flavors. The original three flavors, which are still new to the market, are Hibiscus, Hibiscus & Lime (Pure Hibiscus extract with Key Lime Essence) and Hibiscus & Orange (Pure Hibiscus Extract with Orange Essence.) The new Hibiscus & Blackberry has a sunny vine ripened blackberry flavor. The new Hibiscus & Vanilla is richly aromatic, with a creamy Madagascar vanilla essence. Hibiscus & Pineapple has the tangy, tropical flavor notes of real island-fresh fruit. All are made with 100% All Natural ingredients such a purified water, high quality hibiscus extract, pure cane sugar, and natural flavor essences. (No high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavor or color.) Hibiscus is a colorful flower commonly used to make herbal tea and drinks throughout Egypt, Asia, Africa, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America, where it has long been lauded for its health properties. Hibiscus extract contains many of the same antioxidant compounds as red wine, including flavonoids, polyphenols and anthocyanins, which have been demonstrated to prevent the oxidation of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, and positively affect hypertension (High Blood Pressure).

Hibiscus

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: If you've ever had a beverage flavored with hibiscus, such as Jamaica, the popular Latin American drink, the floral flavor of Ooba will taste quite familiar and pleasing to you. It's a sweet, refreshing taste that's been given a medium level of carbonation and sweetened with sugar. This variety does not include any added flavors mix, leaving it with the pure taste of hibiscus. The resulting flavor is still our favorite flavor of the Ooba lineup. Combining the product's naturally high level of antioxidants with its natural ingredients means the drink has what it takes from a technical point of view to play in this category. Then there's the packaging. Like it's initial rendition, the product uses a proprietary bottle, albeit a plastic one, that's been given a distinctive shape and an attractive label. They've cleaned things up since our first look, with an easier to read front panel and much improved application of the label. Overall, a much improved beverage.

Hibiscus & Lime

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: Hibiscus & Lime was one of the three original flavors to be part of the Ooba line - and it has been given a makeover in both packaging and formulation. First, the flavor. When reviewing the original formulation of this product, we found the product to have a candy like lime flavor that was less than desirable. This time around, they've used a flavor that has some acidity to it, making the lime flavor taste much more pleasant. In addition, this adds some nice contrast to the sweet flavor of the hibiscus, making this a product that can hold its own as part of the Ooba line. Same goes for the packaging, which looks much more polished than the previous effort. All in all, we're now fans of the variety - it has definitely earned a place as part of the Ooba line.

Hibiscus & Orange

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: Hibiscus & Orange is another one the initial three flavors from the Ooba line. Again, they've made huge steps since we took our first look at this flavor, eliminating the strange aroma and candy like flavoring. This time around, orange and hibiscus seem like they were meant for one another, adding the sweet flavor of orange to the mellow earthy flavor of hibiscus. It's very drinkable, but also innovative and upscale, with clean sweetness (thanks to cane sugar) and a crisp finish. Overall, it's a very enjoyable and well balanced mix. Like the other flavors, the subtle label upgrade (better design and better application) and touch of color on the cap help the product achieve a more refined feeling.

Hibiscus & Blackberry

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: While it's somewhat hard to distinguish the hibiscus and blackberry flavors, this is another very enjoyable flavor for the Ooba brand. There's a nice touch of sweet and tart to it, with the two flavors working in unison to satisfy your palate. The balance of sweetener and carbonation give the product a sophisticated taste, while a distinctly shaped bottle is sure to catch the eye. Naming the product "Ooba" is something that will likely create curiosity, although there's certainly going to need to be some consumer education to help sell the concept of a full line of hibiscus flavored products. Still, what's inside the bottle is good and it's definitely one of the more innovative tasting and looking CSDs that we've seen in a while.

Hibiscus & Pineapple

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: Of the new Ooba flavors, this one was one of our favorites. In this case, they've taken the base Hibiscus formula and added some pineapple flavoring to it. While it might be better tasting if they used real juice or brewed hibiscus rather than extracts, this is a very accurate tasting drink and an enjoyable one at that. Plus, we think that pineapple adds some marketability and familiarity to the drink. That should help consumers who are drawn in by the drink's unique packaging but who aren't sold on hibiscus by itself. Overall, the most marketable and one of the best executed flavors of the line.

Hibiscus & Vanilla

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 16 fl oz
BevNET Review: This flavor greatly exceeded our expectations and was, in fact, our favorite flavor of the new varieties that we sampled. Inside this bottle, you've got what basically amounts to a cream soda like flavor that's been mixed with Ooba's flagship Hibiscus. As a result, this is really the only flavor of the Ooba lineup where the hibiscus almost feels like a secondary flavor to the mix. While we're big fans of hibiscus, this isn't a bad thing -- it shows that there's some range and variety to this brand. On the other hand, vanilla doesn't whet the appetite the same way that the fruit flavored combinations do. Overall, it's nice to see some variety, but we think that this flavor is going to be a tough sell over the others.
