BevNET Review: Mamajuana is a non-alcoholic play on the traditional Dominican drink of the same name. In this case, the bark and herbs don't get mixed with rum, but instead they are mixed with water. The flavor that results is something that definitely falls in the spectrum of tea, with an earthy spiced flavor that has been sweetened with agave and sugar. Probably the most noticeable flavor (at least for the American palate) is the presence of clove and cinnamon, which are definitely the two most distinguishable flavors in the mix. However, there's much more to the mixture, including sarsaparilla, maca, chamomile, and various root and bark extracts. All in all, it's a very enjoyable tasting product. The branding and packaging are, at least from an aesthetic point of view, clean and appealing, with a definite sense of authenticity coming from the product's 14 oz. bottle. On the other hand, we think that they need to put much more emphasis on the word "tea." Otherwise, we don't think that the product will be overly appealing to the uninitiated consumer, especially given that the sound of the word "mamajuana" is awfully close to "marijuana" (which of course is not contained in the product). Downplaying the word mamajuana — or perhaps calling it "mamajuana tea" -- would definitely help this drink's cause. Overall, a nice product, but some steps could be taken that would certainly help the drink's marketability. Reviewed on: 12/10/2010
