Pepsi Throwback: Mountain Dew Throwback

Mountain Dew Throwback

Product Type: Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular;
BevNET Review: Of the two “Throwback” flavors, we preferred this one, but that’s mainly because there are plenty of premium quality colas on the market. As far as citrus drinks go, there’s really only one Mountain Dew – and the use of cane sugar certainly makes a difference for this product. For starters, this variety has a much lighter mouth feel, which helps make this an even more drinkable product than the regular HFCS sweetened formula. The other thing that we like about this product is the branding, which seems like a better and more marketable “throwback” than the more old-fashioned looking Pepsi Cola throwback. Plus, there are more people out there who remember the 70’s and 80’s era Mountain Dew logo than the much older Pepsi logo. Overall, an enjoyable product is definitely worth grabbing during the product’s limited run.

They both suck. Mountain Dew is in glass, made with cane sugar.

I wasn't as impressed with Mountain Dew throwback as I was with the Pepsi version. There IS a taste difference but not a vast improvement. In my opinion, they didn't go far enough back in time to the more citrus/tangy taste the drink had in the early 70s.

Tried the Mountain Dew Throwback this morning, and I can confirm the previous reviewer's comment regarding the lighter mouthfeel, in general, it is more pleasant to drink, and perhaps less obviously, I feel more satisfied. This can be explained scientifically; HFCS can not satisfy sweet cravings, sugar does. It definitely tastes like Dew, which is a good thing, plus the added pysch-effect of having something made with "real sugar" is telling my brain that it tastes even better. I'm not certain I can taste the difference between sugar drinks and HFCS, but this is really good. It's amazing that after decades of HFCS crap, Pepsico can release a sugar-based formula and people go nuts for it. Profits may be the bottom line, and sugar will only be a fad. The masses in general do not care how it's sweetened, only that it is, and as long as HFCS is cheaper than sugar, this product will surely disappear eventually, which truly is a shame - but hey; we still have Code Red after all these years... who knows.
