Cranberry Juice

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: While the concept of a cranberry flavored energy drink is certainly not new, the approach that Powerball has taken with the formula of the drink is definitely something that's unique and well executed. How? For starters, this non-carbonated energy drink uses 25 percent cranberry juice, which gives the product a very natural and bold cranberry flavor. They also didn't dump a ton of sugar into it, which leaves the flavor of raw unsweetened cranberry juice intact. Still, while the taste is good, we do wonder how big of a market exists for a non-carbonated cranberry flavored energy drink. On the energy front, the product contains caffeine, taurine, B vitamins, and amino acids, with the energy kick seeming on par with other products in the category (the caffeine content is not disclosed on the can). The design of the can, which is an 8 oz. size, is good, but not great. They've eaten up too much space with the disco ball picture, leaving insufficient space for the text on the bottom. Figuring out a way to get the proportions right would definitely be helpful. Overall, we really like the flavor, but the packaging could still use a little work. Reviewed on: 12/15/2010

Coconut Water

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: With the market for coconut water based drinks so hot already, it's no surprise that it has been adapted to the energy drink category. Powerball Energized Coconut Water uses a 15 percent coconut water blend, coconut flavoring, sugar, and a cocktail of energy drink ingredients to create its non-carbonated formula. From a taste perspective, the coconut is very mellow, with most of it clearly coming from candy like flavorings. To that end, we're not sure that this will have big appeal with coconut water enthusiasts — they'll probably just stick to the real thing. The current flavor is a bit too light for our liking, plus there's a slight off note to the finish. It made it so we really don’t think that we could finish the entire can. From the design perspective, the can is decent, but not standout. At least from afar, the disco ball that's on the front of the package isn't overly obvious as to what it is — and it feels rather generic. Furthermore, we think that they should increase the size of words "coconut water", both because it's the drink's flavor and because it's a marketable aspect of the product. Overall, it seems like a good concept, but the execution of the drink needs work.Reviewed on: 12/15/2010

Acai Berry

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 8 oz can
BevNET Review: The initial flavor of the PowerBall Energized Juice line, Acai Berry is a non-carbonated beverage that’s made with 25 percent juice. Using blueberry and red grape juices, instead of acai, the product’s flavor is pleasant, but no substitute for real acai juice. This results in a fruit punch flavor that drinks very much like a juice drink, rather than your typical energy drink. However, they’ve made it “energized” by adding caffeine, taurine, B-vitamins, inositol, and glucuronolactone. It’s certainly a different approach than what we’ve seen from the energy category in the past, but the product’s juice-like flavor might throw energy drink consumers for a loop. That’s okay by us, but it’s something that’s going to require consumer education on the part of the brand marketer. And it might be nice if a drink called “Acai Berry” actually had acai juice in it. As for the packaging, it feels somewhat disconnected from what’s inside the can. There’s a large disco ball adorning the front of the can, but the name PowerBall is, at least in the US, synonymous with the lottery game of the same name. Plus, while the liquid inside the can is unique, this design and branding feels generic and run of the mill, all the way down to the copy used on the back of the can. Overall, the concept of the formulation is good, but needs work in execution, while the branding is something that could use another trip to the drawing board.Reviewed on: 6/2/2009
