Lemon Lime

BevNET Review: Given the popularity of lemon-lime sports drinks, Power Coco’s Lemon Lime flavor is likely to be the flagship flavor of the brand. While the fruit flavoring definitely tastes more like candy than the actual fruit, the addition of coconut water to the mixture gives the product a slightly exotic flavor profile. Plus, compared with the other flavors of Power Coco, you can definitely taste the coconut water more in this particular variety than the others. On the functional and nutrition fronts, this product was designed to deliver more electrolytes with less sugar and calories (only 50 per bottle) than the competition. Visually, we like the green accent color that they are using, which pairs nicely with the core black and white theme that the drink is based upon. The product has a vibe of performance and technical to it, which seems to be quite the contrast between what we typically see from coconut water drinks. However, we’d like to see something with a bit more personality when it comes to the Power Coco branding (it’s lacking right now). Overall, it’s a good start and a platform that can definitely be improved upon. Reviewed on: 5/23/2012

+ Show Product ReviewTangerine

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 20 oz PET
BevNET Review: With PowerCoco positioning itself as an alternative to sports drinks, we decided to start by taking a look at Tangerine, which is a flavor that drinks very much like a sports drink. The product, which uses a blend of sugar and stevia for its sweetener blend, is a pleasant tasting product that tastes like an “orange” sports drink mixed with coconut water (which appears to be what they are going for). It has a light salty note to it (they’ve added salt to the mix) and a moderate level of sweetness. There is a very slight sweetener aftertaste from the stevia, but otherwise the product is smooth and clean. All in all, what’s inside the bottle is rather enjoyable and something that is definitely thirst quenching. On the outside, PowerCoco has a slim 16 oz PET bottle that is fully wrapped. Visually, the product feels like something that fits into sports more than coconut water, thanks to its dark looking design and vertical text. We’d say the same for the name, which, with the word “power,” gives a nod to performance and feels slightly technical in nature. However, there is a nice subtle reference to a palm tree behind the brand name which is a nice contrast to the rest of the label. Overall it looks as if Power Coco is attempting to target a more mainstream audience than traditional coconut water brands and this seems like a pretty good effort.Reviewed on: 5/23/2012

+ Show Product ReviewTropical Berry

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 20 oz PET
BevNET Review: PowerCoco’s Tropical Berry flavor appears to be trying to fill the role of the “fruit punch” flavor. What we mean is that while the product definitely has a fruit flavor that resembles berry, it actually doesn’t taste like any berry in particular. Instead, it’s what we’d describe as a very candy like berry flavoring (watermelon berry is probably a better description of it). Pairing that with coconut water, which has done as well as it has based on its simple and natural flavor, seems like a bit of an oddity (especially when considering the bright pink color of the liquid) and undermines the reason that coconut water was added in the first place. Finally, there is the use of stevia, which, compared with the first batch of Power Coco that we sampled, is much harder to distinguish from the mix. Functionally, PowerCoco Tropical Berry was designed to stand up against a typical sports drink, which it does quite well according to the nutrition panel. Key benefits include a modest calorie level (50 per bottle), 360mg of potassium, no high fructose corn syrup, and a formulation that can be labeled 100 percent natural. The packaging of the product is something that conceptually seems good (make a mainstream coconut water based sports drink). As for the actual artwork, it’s obvious that this is a coconut water based sports drink, with a slightly technical looking product that feels like it is missing a focal point (for example, the logo is extremely basic) when it comes to the design of the Power Coco brand. Overall PowerCoco’s Tropical Berry is a decent start for a product that definitely has potential.Reviewed on: 5/23/2012
