BevNET Review: While the underlying flavor of Pure Energy is the textbook case of “classic energy,” the fact that they’ve managed to create a zero calorie and sugar-free (using sucralose and ace-k) formulation that tastes like a sugar-sweetened variety is extremely impressive. In fact, it would probably fool most consumers into thinking that this is a sugar sweetened product. However, that alone is not going to make this drink a success. The functionality of the product is likely on par with other energy drinks, with Pure Energy containing a fairly standard cocktail of caffeine, taurine, and vitamins (although they claim at slightly lower levels). As with many energy drinks, the branding and design are the biggest potential area for improvement. In the case of Pure Energy, the black and silver can is forgettable, with a color palette that’s been utilized on probably hundreds of other energy drinks. And the name itself, despite being short and simple, is uninspired and, like the design, forgettable. Overall, exceptional flavor for a zero calorie energy drink, but the packaging is easy to miss.
