The invading Spanish Conquistadors quickly understood the powers of this ancient Quinoa grain and forbid the Incas to grow or use Quinoa. The penalty, if caught, was often death! After a relatively short time, Quinoa disappeared from cultivation, and only tiny patches of Quinoa survived in the wildest regions.

BevNET Review: The Dark Berry flavor of Quinoa Gold is another strong offering. The tart flavor of the berries helps offset the grit of the quinoa and also helps give the product a sweet and tart finish. Given the dark red color of the fluid, we think that this variety will be the most appealing to consumers who are trying this for the first time -- it certainly whets the appetite. Like the other flavors, the biggest area of improvement is for the label. While it works with the super premium positioning of the product, we think a bit of cleanup wouldn't hurt either.Reviewed on: 10/19/2007

Mango Passion

BevNET Review: Gold's Mango Passion flavor was the first flavor that we sampled. Once you get past the grit, which is certainly something that consumers will have to get past, the drink is very pleasing. The grain based formula is very innovative and, in the long run, more believable than some of the super fruits out there. They've spared no expense on this product, using organic ingredients as well as organic agave as the sweetener. Perhaps the only thing missing is real juice, but we think that would be a bit much for a product that's already complex in flavor. Lastly, there's the packaging, which has a front panel that feels a bit cluttered. Less is more -- that's all we'll stress for round two.Reviewed on: 10/19/2007

Pina Colada

BevNET Review: Pina Colada isn't going to be as marketable as the fruit flavors, we found this flavor to be the best executed of the bunch. Specifically, the pina colada flavor pairs nicely with the earthy flavor of the quinoa, even to the point that it makes the grittiness less pronounced. Plus, the pina colada is a nice change from the fruit flavor of the other two varieties. The big question for this product is whether quinoa (as a concept) will stick with consumers. It's certainly innovative, but it will also require consumer education. In the meantime, we think they need to clean up the logo a bit, starting with the placement and type treatment of the "QUINOA GOLD" logo on the front of the bottle.
