RelaxZen Sport

Product Type:Functional: Relaxation Drink; Container: 2.5 oz shot
BevNET Review: Featuring a “sweet victory berry” flavor, RelaxZen’s Sport formula is a product that is designed to deliver “focused performance.” So, it’s not a sports drink, but instead a product that has been enhanced with ingredients like GABA, L-theanine, L-theonine, schizandra, and other functional ingredients that are typically used for memory, focus, and relaxation. They’ve also added small amounts of sodium, potassium, and vitamin B12, which are presumably to help bolster the product’s Sport name. In terms of flavor, the zero calorie formulation is sweetened with ace-k and sucralose, which is certainly our preferred blend in terms of overall sweetness and aftertaste. It goes well with the product’s mellow berry flavor, which is similar in style to an energy shot but without the caffeine bite. Packaging is busy, but generally easy to figure out. However, the name Relaxzen sends a slightly counter message to the flavor’s “Sport” and performance emphasis. Overall, a very enjoyable entry from RelaxZen.Reviewed on: 7/2/2010

Mellow Berry Night Formula

Product Type:Functional: Relaxation Drink; Container: 3 oz PET
BevNET Review: The Relaxzen “Night” formula starts with the same sucralose and ace-K sweetened flavor as its “Day” counterpart, but delivers a different functional cocktail. This being the Night formula, it’s designed to “promote sleep”, which it accomplishes primarily through the use of valerian root and melatonin, two non-pharmaceutical sleep aids. They’ve also kept the GABA and L-theanine in the mix, but the formulation is also supplemented with chamomile extract and L-threonine. Ultimately, the consumer’s perception of the drink’s function will, like most functional drinks, vary based on their own response to these ingredients. From our point of view, selling sleep in a bottle is an interesting concept, although one that probably can’t compete with the likes of sleeping pills and other more potent remedies. Plus, there’s only so often that someone is likely to want to consume a drink to aid sleep, whereas the Day variety could certainly become a part of someone’s daily regimen. On the packaging front, they’ve again done a nice job of making a package that’s clean and easy to read, although it lacks on the personality front compared to some of the competition. Overall, a well executed effort , but we suspect that the day time formula will have more legs to it.Reviewed on: 10/1/2009

Mellow Berry Day Formula

Product Type:Functional: Relaxation Drink; Container: 3 oz PET
BevNET Review: The Day formula of RelaxZen is, like the Night formula, a “mellow berry” flavored shot that is sweetened with sucralose and ace-k. The resulting mixture is zero calorie, but has a nice amount of sweetness to it and a flavor that’s actually quite pleasant (can’t say that about all shots that are on the market today). Functionally, this product is, as the name states, designed to reduce stress and balance mood. They accomplish that through the use of acai extract, GABA, passionflower extract, L-theanine, and B vitamins. Compared to the Night formula, which uses sleep agents in melatonin and valerian root, the function might be harder to feel in this variety. But then again, this variety is less likely to be misused by people who aren’t looking to go to sleep after consumption. On the packaging front, they’ve done a nice job of creating something that’s visually appealing and unique, using a tallish 2.5 oz. bottle that has a wider opening than those using the “classic” shot bottle. That, paired with the product’s easy to decipher name and its clean front panel, makes this a product that has the merits to compete in the relaxation space. Reviewed on: 10/1/2009
