Chocolate Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 oz glass
BevNET Review: Chocolate and tea are things that are certainly very enjoyable and popular on their own – but combined? Fortunately for Rob’s Really Good, the flavors do seem to work well together in this drink. The base of the product is a fairly standard tasting mixture of black tea and sugar, which tastes very much like classic sweet tea. The addition of chocolate flavor delivers an enjoyable secondary flavor for the product, especially since there’s only a splash of it. The product is USDA Organic certified and features 60 calories per 8 oz. serving (it’s a 14 oz. bottle), putting it right in the middle of the sweet and not-so-sweet players. Packaging is a tall and slender glass bottle, which utilizes a design that we’d describe as simultaneously wholesome and funky. It definitely has the vibe of a high quality beverage. Overall, it’s hard to say how marketable chocolate flavored tea will actually be, but Rob’s Really Good has given it their best shot and the resulting product is very enjoyable. Iced Tea with Lemon

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 oz glass
BevNET Review: Of all the Rob’s Really Good flavors, this is certainly the most mainstream and marketable right out of the gate. After all, any RTD line that has tea flavors has to have the classic mixture of tea and lemon. The execution of the product is quite good, with only four ingredients (water, organic sugar, organic black tea, organic lemon juice) giving the product a home-style flavor. From a sweetness point of view, this product has 16 g of sugar (and 60 calories) per 8 oz. serving, making it closer to the “less sweet” side of the spectrum. With the exception of the word “organic” that’s placed in the middle of the graphic of the sun, the graphics on the label are nicely illustrated. These images definitely help create the perception that this product is both high quality and better for you than some of the competition. Plus, it adds a touch of fun, which is something that’s often missing from products in this category. Overall, a very strong entry from Rob’s Really Good.Reviewed on: 3/16/2010

Malaysian Hibiscus

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 14 oz glass
BevNET Review: We’re starting to see a resurgence in the use of hibiscus in beverages lately, so it’s no surprise that Rob’s Really Good has chosen to use this flavor. Their version is spot on, with a four ingredient formulation making for a product that’s extremely natural and enjoyable tasting. The hibiscus flavor is done just right, with a little bit lighter strength than what you’ll find in competing or ethnic products like Jamaica. This approach also allows the sweetener to be kept to a modest level, with 16 g of sugar per 8 oz. serving. The flavor has nice balance to it, with a very smooth and light mouth feel and a clean finish. Packaging is vibrant and attractive, with wholesome looking illustrations providing the backdrop. However, we’re not sure what value is added by calling it “Malaysian," especially since there’s no further mention of this word on the package. On that same note, it would be interesting if there were more about “Rob” on the bottle. Personifying the brand is a great idea (it worked for “Tom & Tom”), but one that’s hard to realize the benefit of without following through. Overall, we really like the flavor of the product and the aesthetics of the design, but there’s still a little room for improvement. Reviewed on: 3/16/2010

Blueberry Iced Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the flavored iced teas that are in the initial Rob’s Really Good lineup, this one was our favorite in terms of overall execution. Starting with what’s inside the bottle, they’ve hit the nail on the head, with a pleasant blueberry flavor mixing nicely with a moderately sweetened base of black tea. Having USDA Organic certification is a plus, as is the product’s use of cane sugar and its 60 calorie per serving profile. It goes down extremely smooth, with just the right amount of each flavor in this balanced formulation. On the outside, an illustrated depiction of three happy blueberries staring right at you is kitschy, but adds a wholesome, not-so-processed feeling to the product. Otherwise, we can’t help but wonder if they’ve dedicated too much room to the large illustration, which, despite looking nice, distracts the eye from the rest of the label. Overall, really good flavor and branding that’s unique and memorable make this an entry that’s definitely worthy of shelf space. Reviewed on: 1/28/2010

Agave Mate

Product Type:Tea: Alternative; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the initial lineup, Rob’s Really Good “Agave Mate” is the standout flavor. The product uses only four ingredients, including water, organic agave nectar, organic yerba mate, and citric acid, which results in a straight to the point flavor that allows the ingredients to shine. The agave and mate flavors work well together, with their subtle earthiness make for an extremely pleasant and drinkable mixture. The mate flavor is definitely geared towards the mainstream (it reminds us of Bombilla & Gourd), while the use of agave makes it sweet, but not too sweet. And, they’ve kept the calories (60 per serving) and carbohydrates (13g per serving) under control, which is certainly a nice selling point. From an appearance point of view, they’ve given the product a cartoonish look that features a desert landscape that’s filled with happy looking cactuses. It’s definitely a different approach than the other mate players, with a less serious tone that’s clearly reaching for the mainstream buyer. With this formulation and packaging, we think that’s an approach that will work well for this product. Overall, a very enjoyable product from start to finish.Reviewed on: 1/28/2010

Italian Peach Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: While we can only recall one other “Italian” RTD tea that we’ve sampled (San Benedetto), this one doesn’t feel overly Italian to us (aside from maybe the label art). Regardless, it’s quite good, with a mildly sweet mixture of black tea and natural peach flavoring that’s smooth in body and clean in finish. This product fits nicely in the middle of the tea category, having mainstream flavor and 60 calories per serving (about 120 per bottle). Packaging is funky, but clean, with polished looking illustrations giving the product a wholesome and authentic vibe. However, we’re not sure that calling it Italian is the right word to help market peach iced tea. In addition, the word “Organic” is placed in an area that’s hard to read and, thanks to the placement of the a USDA Organic seal, an unnecessary front panel addition. Nitpicking aside, we really like the flavor and the wholesome angle that they’ve taken. Plus, having a solid peach flavor is key to any iced tea line – and they’ve definitely achieved that. Half & Half

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 14 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Rob’s Really good Half & Half is a well-executed mixture of the classic mixture of black tea, sugar, and lemonade. In this case, they’ve kept the flavors – and sweetness level – to reasonable levels, resulting in a product that has 60 calories per 8 oz. serving. Thanks to the use of sugar (as opposed to the more viscous HFCS), the product feels light in the mouth, finishing with just the right amount of lemon flavor. On the outside, the 14 oz. bottle has a hip, earthy vibe that works well with an organic certified beverage like this. We also like the choice of a slender bottle, which has a naturally “lighter” vibe than the stock 16 oz. bottle that’s used by most tea companies. However, we don’t feel as though the underlying message and purpose of this brand offers anything overly new or unique as there are certainly many choices for organic, sweetened RTD teas on the market. Still, Rob’s Really Good is, as the name states, really good, and we like the homemade, inviting vibe of the brand. Definitely worth a try.Reviewed on: 1/28/2010
