The Original Rock Melon is an all-natural cantaloupe juice beverage that comes packaged in a 16 ounce HDPE bottle. We honestly can’t say that we’ve ever had (or desired to have) bottled cantaloupe juice, so we weren’t quite sure what to expect when opening this bottle. It’s made with water, cantaloupe puree, sugar, and natural flavor, but it does not list the a percentage of the formulation that’s juice. While it has a very pleasant and accurate cantaloupe aroma, the flavor leaves something to be desired. Specifically, it’s too sweet, which is definitely not something that can be said about cantaloupe in its raw state. As you drink the product, the sugar takes over and lingers after you finish it (also note that it has 220 calories and 56g of sugar per bottle). Furthermore, the fruit flavor lacks the freshness of real cantaloupe. Something definitely seems lost in whatever was done to puree and pasteurize it. On the outside, it’s pretty clear what this product is and it definitely does a nice job of whetting the palate. However, the 16oz size seems too big, especially given the caloric and sugar content of the product (8 or 12 ounces would be more than enough). Also, we question the marketability of this product. How big is the demand for pasteurized cantaloupe juice? Can other flavors be added to the line? From our perspective, the answers aren’t really obvious to either of these questions. Overall, we give them credit for creating something that’s unique and nice looking, but the marketability and flavor are two big question marks for the product.
