With the sharks circling at virtually every edge of the Vitaminwater empire, it definitely makes sense for an energy drink marketer like Rockstar to try and grab a piece of the caffeinated segment of enhanced water. This flavor, Orange Tangerine is nicely executed and does, for the most part, live up to what we’ve come to expect from the brand. The product has a very pleasant tasting orange flavor (think orange sports drink), especially considering that this is a zero-calorie product. The use of sucralose and ace-k create a very natural tasting sweetness and keep the aftertaste to a minimum. You can taste the caffeine, but, like the artificial sweeteners, it doesn’t really get in the way of the enjoyment of this product. Functionally, the beverage packs a punch, with 200mg of caffeine, B vitamins, and taurine being the functional cocktail that Rockstar has chosen. On the outside, the company uses the same stock 20 oz. bottle that is used for many enhanced waters and sports drinks. To that end, the product lacks that extra visual pop that you’ll find in Rockstar’s current aluminum can lineup, where matte paint and textured finishes are more the norm than the exception. Nevertheless, having the credibility of the Rockstar brand should give this product a big leg up over the competition. Overall, we very much like what Rockstar has done with this product.
