Energy Mocha Java

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 310mL Plastic
BevNET Review: Sambazon’s Mocha Java Energy smoothie is a product that seems to straddle several different categories. At its core, it’s a juice drink, with a base of Sambazon’s acai juice. From there, they’ve added soy milk, coffee, cocoa and sugar for the coffee portion of the drink. Finally, there’s added yerba mate, green tea extract and guarana extract to round out the rest of the energy blend. Putting all these pieces together, the USDA organic and non-GMO product inside the bottle is extremely well-balanced, with the flavor profile very much that of a coffee drink (albeit a very mellow one). There’s definitely some acai flavor to this product (and some grit from the pulp), but it comes in at the same point as the cocoa. This results in an almost chocolate-berry flavor to the coffee, which definitely tastes unique and sophisticated and makes great use of Sambazon’s acai. Nutritionally, the product has 1.3 servings per bottle at 180 calories and includes 7 g of protein, 27 g of carbohydrates, 80 mg of caffeine (per bottle), 120 mg potassium, 8 percent RDA iron, 4 percent RDA vitamin A, and omega’s 3, 6, and 9. Visually, Mocha Java is easily identifiable as a Sambazon product, with the same purple 10.5 oz. bottle that you’ll find for all of their flavors. It’s definitely an appealing looking product, but we’d like to see Mocha Java larger than Energy. Overall, this is a great addition to the lineup and one that definitely makes for a nice morning option.Reviewed on: 3/29/2013

Blended Breakfast

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 310mL Plastic
BevNET Review: Sambazon’s Blended Breakfast is a product that combines a somewhat standard smoothie base of strawberry and banana with trendy ingredients such as chia, quinoa, and amaranth. The resulting flavor is quite good, with the familiar flavor of strawberry and banana serving as the core flavor while the added acai gives the product a slight twist to both the taste and the consistency (the beverage has that mild grit that you’ll find in all of Sambazon’s drinks). Soy milk, which is the first ingredient, gives the product a subtle milky flavor, and it seems to pair with the banana pretty well. And as for the added grains, they don’t seem to do much more than a slight earthy note to the finish. In terms of this product being a “blended breakfast,” it certainly seems to have all the components of a bowl of cereal. That’s also reflected on the nutrition panel, where the product has fiber, protein, vitamins, omegas, and potassium. On the design front, this product very much follows the standard Sambazon style. However, the front panel is pretty heavily loaded with text, which is something that we could live without (especially if it made more room for the graphic on the bottom). Overall, it’s a very enjoyable product and one of the more innovative flavors that we’ve seen from Sambazon. Reviewed on: 3/29/2013

Supergreens with Kale + Ginger

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 310mL Plastic
BevNET Review: Supergreens with Kale and Ginger is an acai-based line extension to Sambazon’s organic juice line. Featuring a “new recipe” (we’re not sure if we ever sampled the old recipe), the product has a lot going on in terms of flavor. However, neither kale nor ginger are primary flavors, with acai, apple, mango, and banana instead acting as the main flavors that we tasted. The kale and ginger (along with the other greens that make up their “supergreens” blend) hit your tongue at the end, providing a slight vegetable note and a hint of spice. Maybe we’re in the minority of people who actually enjoy these flavors, but we’d love to see more of them and less apple and banana. Still, what they’ve created is balanced and enjoyable, with the underlying acai flavor (and the grit that comes from it being unclarified) making this another solid flavor from Sambazon. Visually, it’s more of the same, with Sambazon’s trademark purple label and warrior logo being easy to identify from afar. Much like our comment about the flavor that’s inside the bottle, we’d like to see a bit more visual emphasis on the fact that this product has kale and ginger -- it’s a lot more descriptive than “supergreens.” Overall, this is definitely a very enjoyable addition to the Sambazon line. Chocolate Almond Coconut Milk Protein Superfood Smoothie

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 10.5 oz PET
BevNET Review: As far as the Sambazon line goes, this is probably the best there is (aside from perhaps their flagship acai flavor). The product literally tastes like melted chocolate coconut ice cream, with a rich and smooth body that’s heavy on the chocolate flavor. The coconut adds a further note of indulgence, while also helping to thicken the mix. The almond flavor (which comes from flavoring) is hard to taste, which, given it’s billing on the front of the package, is a bit of a let-down. Honestly, we feel as though both the almond and the acai are unnecessary in terms of this drink’s flavor. However, the nutrition part of the beverage, which is protein (8g) and antioxidants, make both the coconut milk and acai an important part of the drink. Packaging and positioning are good, but would be better (strictly from the point of view of appealing to your senses) if the drink weren’t so purple heavy (purple has little to do with chocolate, almond, and coconut). Plus, it’s easy to miss amongst the other Sambazon products. Overall, this is a really amazing tasting product, but it’s one whose focus seems to be far from being an acai drink (which is what Sambazon is -- or maybe was -- supposedly all about). Supergreens Superfruit Smoothie

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 10.5 oz PET
BevNET Review: Sambazon’s “Supergreens with Acai Berries” is an organic certified blend of acai juice, apple juice, banana puree, mango puree, grape juice, acerola juice, amazing grass organic super greens, ginger juice, and a few other ingredients to round things out. The color of the drink is dark brown (greens drinks are typically green), which definitely doesn’t go with the taste of the drink. The flavor is heavy on the apple, grape, banana, and acerola, while the greens and acai provide some subtle back flavors. It’s tart and sweet, with a thick body that definitely requires you to drink it slowly. If you were expecting something with a wheatgrass or “green” flavor, this drink definitely isn’t it. Packaging follows the rest of the Sambazon line, which has a purple middle area with green accent colors at the top and bottom. Ultimately, the product’s flavor and packaging are both enjoyable, but it’s hard to get overly excited about what seems to be a niche flavor for this brand. Reviewed on: 3/13/2012

Acai Berry & Chocolate Protein

Product Type:Functional: Protein Drinks and Supplements; Container: 10.5 oz PET
BevNET Review: Of the two “Protein” varieties of Sambazon, the Chocolate variety is the stronger. The chocolate flavor is really enjoyable without being overwhelming, while the body of the drink is light and airy in comparison to a standard thick protein drink. There’s a slight amount of grit to it, which is presumably from the acai pulp. Otherwise, you really have to look hard to find any impact from the added acai. While this probably makes the flavor of the drink have broad appeal, the type of consumer who will purchase an acai chocolate protein drink might be disappointed. Functionally, the drink has about 10g of protein (and 240+ calories and 7+ grams of fat) per 10.5 fl oz bottle, which is derived from soy and hemp. It’s hard to say how this level of protein will go over with consumers, especially given where the drink is in terms of calories and fat. On the outside, the product looks very much like the other Sambazon varieties, but, using a slightly tweaked label design, the product is easier to read and a bit more polished than Sambazon’s prior efforts. Overall, it’s a great tasting product, but we don’t see this as a game changer for Sambazon. Reviewed on: 3/16/2011

Acai Berry & Vanilla

Product Type:Functional: Protein Drinks and Supplements; Container: 10.5 oz PET
BevNET Review: Using a blend of vanilla and acai flavors, this product has a mellower flavor than its chocolate counterpart. There’s more acai flavor in the mix, while the vanilla is more subdued, resulting in a nice balance. The liquid inside the bottle is almost brown in color, which might make some consumers wonder if they got the right product. Protein, which is derived from soy and hemp, is at 8g per serving (1.3 servings per bottle) with 190 calories and 6g of fat. Ounce per ounce it’s not the most efficient way to get protein, but we really like the unique flavor of this product and the added benefits of acai. Packaging is very clean and appealing, with an approachable design that’s easy to read and pleasing to the eye. Overall, it’s hard to tell just how much crossover there is with acai and protein drinks, Sambazon has done a really nice job executing this flavor. Reviewed on: 3/16/2011

Pomegranate Synergy

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container:
BevNET Review: As expected, Pomegranate and Acai work quite well together, creating a flavor that has just the right amount of tart and sweet fruit flavors. In terms of pure sweetness, this product is actually pretty mild compared to other acai drinks out there, which keeps the product light in your mouth. As with other Sambazon drinks, the product has a more pronounced flavor than competing products, especially when it comes to the cocoa note that hits your tongue at the finish. Packaging is the trademark Sambazon design, with their logo front on center on a purple colored bottle. They’ve put “organic” right at eye level, but it’s somewhat confusing as to the product’s name (“pomegranate synergy”) and flavor (“with pomegranate”). Tightening this up would be helpful, although we’re not convinced that”pomegranate synergy” really adds anything to the product. Overall, a very nice tasting addition to the lineup. Rainforest Immunity

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container:
BevNET Review: We’ve always been fans of acerola juice, especially Sambazon’s Shaman Immunity, which is now discontinued. This product is a well executed effort to get acerola juice back into the mix. They’ve blended a variety of juices, including acai, grape, apple, passionfruit, and acerola, which gives the product several layers of fruit flavor. The acai is still distinguishable, but the cocoa finish has gone missing. In its place is an almost tropical style finish, which should make this a nice alternative for those who are new to acai. From a positioning point of view, we think that they need to more clearly explain the “immunity” aspect of the drink, which, while likely more for marketing than anything else, might make consumers think that there is functionality in this drink beyond the antioxidants and vitamins that are present in the fruit. Otherwise, we’d like to see the flavor of the drink more prominently positioned. All nitpicking aside, this is an extremely enjoyable product from Sambazon — one of our favorites to date. Amazon Energy - Diet

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Sambazon’s first use of stevia comes in the form of Amazon Energy Diet, a 40-calorie acai berry flavored energy drink. Like the other products that make up the Amazon Energy line, this product has 80mg of caffeine that’s sourced from yerba mate (Guayaki brand) and guarana. While it’s noticeably stevia-sweetened, it’s a pretty well executed mix, with a mild but tart acai flavor and a lightly carbonated base. There’s also a nice mate note to the finish, which helps further cut the aftertaste that stevia is known for. As far as the packaging goes, it follows the standard convention for diet products, using a silver background that will be easily identifiable from the other flavors. It’s clean and well thought-out, with minimal text placed on the front panel. Overall, this is the best tasting diet organic energy drink that we’ve had to date (an admittedly small group, but still).Reviewed on: 4/29/2009

Amazon Energy - Jungle Love

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: Featuring the proprietary “Jungle Love Herb Blend” (aka maca root, catuaba bark, damiana leaf & flower, and passion flower), a healthy dose of fruit juices (acerola, acai, and passion fruit), and naturally derived caffeine (80mg) from yerba mate and guarana, this product is very much in line with what Sambazon is all about. Even better than that, it’s an extremely enjoyable product to drink. The fruit flavors are clean, while the herbal ingredients and mate give the product a “bite” lets you know that this product is derived from high quality ingredients. We’re fans of the packaging as well, which has the Sambazon logo placed prominently on a black and gray backdrop. It’s a slick looking design that has a clean and easy-to-read front panel, which should make it have a nice shelf presence.Reviewed on: 4/29/2009

Amazon Energy

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 12 fl oz
BevNET Review: Sambazon, a company known for producing acai based juice drinks, has entered into the traditional energy drink category with its Amazon Energy product. The product uses a USDA Organic mixture of acai, acerola juice, guarana extract, Guayaki branded Yerba Mate, and Steaz branded green tea extract. Rio Energy

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 10.4 fl oz (310 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: Rio Energy is Sambazon's entry into the hybrid energy category. It uses an acai-based formula like its other varieties, but it also has added yerba mate and guarana. The flavor is good, but not as clean and smooth as other varieties, especially in the product's finish. Specifically, something tastes a bit off, which certainly could be the result of the added mate -- it has an earthy note to it. A bit of cleanup at the end would be nice. And, for the record, we didn't feel any buzz from the product (not a surprise given that it has a reasonable 42mg of caffeine per bottle). Packaging is the same as the other recent Sambazon additions, with a purple-wrapped bottle that has prominent promotion of its organic formulation. We do, however, think the word "energy" is minimized relative to the other words on the label. Plus, the word "RIO" touches the word "ENERGY", which results in the word looking more like "BIO." A little space would quickly clear that up. Overall, a good entry, but we'd like to see a bit more to differentiate it from the rest of the line AND a bit more emphasis on the energy additives.Reviewed on: 6/12/2007

Antioxidant Trinity

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 10.5 fl oz (310 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: Now THIS is what a superb acai product tastes like! The flavor is clean and crisp, with an ample dose of real fruit flavor, including blueberry, pomegranate, acerola, and acai. All four of these flavors can be distinguished in the mix. They also combine perfectly together, resulting in a complex flavor that is tremendously enjoyable and smooth from start to finish. The packaging features the trademark Sambazon purple and it definitely omits a vibe of "super premium." However, the blue and pink colors used for the lettering don't really go with the other colors on the bottle, leaving the bottle feeling a bit incomplete. Still, a superb product and, color choices aside, we think it's one of Sambazon's best yet.Reviewed on: 4/5/2007

Organic Açai Juice (Purple Power)

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 10.5 fl oz (310 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: The most recent beverage from Sambazon is Purple Power, a lightly flavored organic beverage that features a mellow dose of acai and agave. With only five ingredients (always a plus, in our book), this beverage has a wholesome flavor that’s not as intense as some of the other Sambazon drinks. Specifically, the tart and sweet flavor that we typically see in acai beverages is not as prevalent in this variety. Also, at 155 calories and 22g of sugar per 10.5 oz bottle, Organic Acai is a little more friendly to those who are counting calories. Finally, there is the packaging which, with its bright purple hue, is different than the green used by the other flavors. Overall, they’ve done a good job of creating a new, more mellow and, as a result, mainstream style of acai beverage.Reviewed on: 11/20/2006

Mango Uprising

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 16 fl oz (473 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: If you've never never tried açaí, but have always been curious, Sambazon's Mango Uprising is a great product to start with. The This organic concoction is made with açaí, grape juice, apple juice, bananas and mangos, resulting in a smooth flavor that's sweet and wholesome. There's also Sambazon's trademark grit, which gives it that "freshly made" feeling in your mouth. Unlike many competing açaí products, Mango Uprising doesn't overwhelm your mouth with an over tart açaí body. Instead, this well balanced product was formulated in such a way that each fruit flavor can be distinguished from the others. Plus, they've thrown in some guarana, which adds a natural boost of energy. The packaging is clean and efficient, with a 10.5 fl oz bottle making it look distinct from the larger sized bottled used by traditional smoothie drinks. However, we do think that it would be prudent of Sambazon to put a bit more emphasis on the energy boosting ingredients. Still, that's an extremely minor point for this superb product.Reviewed on: 4/28/2006

BevNET Review: As far as protein drinks go, the taste of Sambazon's Chocolate-flavored protein drink isn't bad. It has a sweet flavor, with hints of chocolate and açaí throughout. However, the combination of açaí and chocolate isn't a match made in heaven, and the finish tastes slightly off. But again, if it's a protein drink you're looking for, this is not a bad option and the USDA organic seal is a major plus, in our opinion. Supergreens Revolution

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 16 fl oz (473 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: Smoothie brands have often SKUs like this, a wheat grass, barley grass, and alfalfa laced formula that typically appeals to the health food purist and has a flavor that tastes like mush. Supergreens Revolution truly is a revolution in that sense, putting an end to the myth that superfoods have to taste super bad. Mango Banana

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 16 fl oz (473 ml) plastic
BevNET Review: Mango Banana is a smooth and refreshing product. It is 100% organic, made with white grape, apple, mango, banana, and red grape juice/purees. The beverage is rich purple in color, attributed from the Brazilian Açai berry – loaded with 10-30 times the anthocyanins (purple antioxidants) found in red wine. The label catches the eye with an almost fluorescent green “Sambazon” label but works well with the orange and purple hues. While the reigning flavor in this smoothie is banana, it is certainly not overpowering and paired with bits of Açai pulp mixed in give the beverage a thicker consistency and a rather fresh from the blender texture. The product is just sweet enough and finishes off quite nicely. Coupled with antioxidants, omega fatty acids, amino acids, guarana seed extract for that natural boost, and Sambazon’s sustainable development program in the Amazon, all equate to a solid and very satisfying package.Reviewed on: 4/27/2006
