BevNET Review: This root beer, made by the Matt Brewing Co., is another argument in favor of this esteemed family business to stick to brewing beer, although a slightly less vehement one than the company’s other sodas. With a sweet, uncomplicated flavor and a surprisingly light body, the 1888 root beer is fairly drinkable, but it’s not going to hold up against more established brands in terms of taste or style. Why the Matt family chose to go with High Fructose Corn Syrup in this mix is beyond us.

The best I've found

I've been trying to the "ultimate root beer" and I've tried many. This is my favorite, hands down. Despite having corn syrup, it doesn't taste thick. Great head. No unpleasant aftertaste. Smooth and creamy. Put down your mass produced Barq's and your vile tasting Virgil's and try this out if you can find it.

My husband and I discovered Saranac on our honeymoon... go figure. We love it!!! I try and order a case for our anniversary and or birthdays, what a great wife I am. seriously this is the best root beer we have ever tasted. We love it and would love to know where we can get it, uh closer to the Mason Dixon line.

The best Root Beer I ever tasted. Everytime me and wife visit my son in Binghampton University we have to stop to the grocery store (Wigmans)to bring home about 4 or six pack of Saranac Root Beer in Yonkers were we live. Is there any place in yonkers where we could purchase Saranac Root Beer or any grocery store closer to us? Thanks!!!!!

It is VERY Good!

I think it's very very good! It's not too sweet. It's just right on sweetness. The flavor is like A&W but Saranac is better.

Underrated

This root beer is the best I've had. Better than the widely available A&W, Mug, Barq's, and IBC. After drinking this for a few weeks, drinking IBC was like drinking straight seltzer water. This is the richest.

The Great Sarnac Does it Again

One of the better root beers, a complicated woody taste with bite, not too sweet. Nice overall.

Contrary to the editorial review, I love this stuff. In fact, it's on my short list of favorite root beers (granted, Bull Dog and Sparky's aren't available in Manhattan, so I can't compare them). Despite the corn syrup, it's a tasty, smooth brew that I don't find boring at all. It's not all that easy to find in my area, so I always pick it up if I run across it. It also holds its own with vanilla ice cream and makes a really good Black Cow.
