Review: Oat Shake - Coffee

Posted: Apr 04, 2012 at 10:54 AM (Last Updated: Apr 11, 2012 at 10:59 AM)
Simpli’s latest addition to their Oat Shake line is “Coffee,” which uses coffee powder and flavoring. The result is something that has a mild coffee flavor and 25 mg of natural caffeine. As far as the flavor goes, it follows in the footsteps of Simpli’s other products, which is to say that it tastes very much like a sweetened dairy alternative that is in the same realm as things like rice and soy milk (albeit more enjoyable). The coffee flavor could stand to be a bit stronger -- it’s closer to flavored milk than it is a coffee drink. That said, it doesn’t seem like something that will necessarily add new consumers to the brand (you definitely have to like the flavor of their base oat “milk” to like this product). Packaging is an 8.45 oz. Tetra Pak carton, which has a brown color that visually fits with coffee. Again, given the color of the product and heavy emphasis on coffee in the copy, we expected more coffee to be inside the carton. Still, as an addition to the Simpli Oat Shake brandl, its underlying quality is still on par with the rest of their products. Overall, we like the concept and the look of the product, but more coffee would make this more enjoyable.
