BevNET Review: Serenity is a new entry into the relaxation drink category whose tagline is “zen beverage.” Inside the can, there’s a carbonated zero-calorie formulation that’s sweetened with sucralose and ace-k. The flavoring of the drink tastes like cream soda meets functional beverage, with a slightly less creamy body and, of course, some “functional” aftertaste. While we find this to be a pleasing flavor as we’re fond of cream soda, we’re not convinced that this is something that’s going to maximize the drink’s appeal. And is it what we think of as a “Serenity” flavor? No. A lighter bodied flavor would definitely be more appropriate. From a functionality point of view, the product’s most obvious ingredients are melatonin and valerian root, which are two ingredients that are used in various types of sleep aids (the label doesn’t say how much of these ingredients are contained in a serving of Serenity), as well as B vitamins and rose hip extracts. Ultimately, one’s response to those ingredients will dictate how functional this drink seems. On the outside, the can has a design that’s clean and simple. Then again, they don’t really explain what the drink is about – or what’s inside of it. While it says “become relaxed” on the side of the can, it’s vertical and out of the way, leaving the consumer to interpret two rather ambiguous words in “Serenity” and “zen.” Better placement of the word “relaxation” would certainly help things out. With its current design and text, we could easily mistake this for an energy drink (especially since “zen” has been used on energy products) – and that’s certainly not what they are going for. Overall, it’s good, but could be better, especially if the packaging and flavor were more in line with what this product is going for. Still, a good first effort. Reviewed on: 8/20/2009
