Pomegranate Ginger

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz. can
BevNET Review: First of all, using actual pomegranate juice in a drink that’s "pomegranate flavored" always scores big points with us. For the most part, they’ve done right with this mix, blending pomegranate and white grape (the "sweetener") juices with plant extracts (elderflower, nettle leaf, dandelion root, honeysuckle) to create a flavor that’s very pleasing to the palate. The ginger, which comes from extract, is rather mellow and not spicy as one might expect from a drink that is billed as ginger flavored. That's fine with us, especially since the pomegranate and other herbal flavors are quite pleasant. Packaging is eye catching, with an aesthetically pleasing front panel that makes good use of colors (aside from pairing green with pomegranate) and distinctive type treatment. However, requiring the consumer to turn the can is, well, something that could cause this product to be mistaken for an energy drink or simply passed over in a busy cooler. Overall, a very enjoyable product that's one of the more innovative approaches to the CSD category that we've seen in a while.

Blackberry Chamomile

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz. can
BevNET Review: This was the final flavor of Solixir that we sampled. Featuring a mellow blackberry flavor, this is an enjoyable tasting carbonated beverage. There’s only a touch of sweetness to it (juice sweetened), which helps the drink keep its calories at only 50 per can. On the other hand, the acidity from the juice hides pretty much all of the botanical flavors that are supposedly in this drink. We were only able to detect it during the first sip and only on the finish. That was somewhat disappointing to us, especially since the drink markets itself as containing chamomile and hibiscus, which have been known to make for some exquisite tasting beverages. As far as the exterior of this product goes, we have the same concerns about this variety as we do with the others. Specifically, the choice of color and the vertical text on the front panel. Overall, this variety of Solixir needs the most improvement of the three that we sampled.

Orange Maté

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz. can
BevNET Review: This is actually one of the better drinks that we’ve seen come out of a 12 oz. slim can. Using a no sugar added formula that’s very light on calories and sugar, this product mixes a variety of herbs and spices with a touch of fruit juice and carbonated water to make a concoction that’s not your average CSD. The resulting mix has a hint of fruit juice to it (although a bit too much white grape), some earthy mate flavor, and a slight spice to the finish. Looking at the can, it’s definitely not what we expected to find inside of it. Speaking of the can, it’s a striking looking product, especially when it’s put with the rest of the Solixir lineup. However, the fact that you have to turn the can on its side to read the flavor and benefits isn’t something that we’re fans of. In addition, the fact that they are trying to be a functional beverage seems lost and lacks credibility. Lastly, and to pick nits, the choice of red as a color defies normal beverage convention of color loosely matching flavor. Not something that we’ll hold against them, but we’re definitely curious to see how this strategy works for the brand. Overall, a very enjoyable and unique approach to a CSD with good execution throughout.
