Sunkist Naturals

Sunkist Naturals

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Here at Maverick Brands, we aim to create the best tasting smoothies and juices made from premium, all-natural ingredients. We teamed up with Sunkist Growers, a non-profit cooperative of regional and family owned farms who for over 100 years have continuously delivered the best quality fruit. By further expanding the Sunkist network, we were able to locate some of the best farms around the world that produce superior fruit. We discovered regional fruit, like India's Alphonso mango, known for its distinct ambrosia-like flavor. At home we came across local farms in Oregon growing the most sumptuous Marion blackberries that are perfect for blending into antioxidant-packed smoothies. We feel good about supporting regional and family farms and rewarding growers who take real pride in their work. Their pride is evident in the produce, and from this we are able to craft better-for-you beverages that deliver integrity and supreme nutritional value. We will always believe in the best quality, from start to finish.

Coconut Water

Product Type:Juice: Coconut Water and Juice; Container: 15.2 oz PET
BevNET Review: Sunkist Naturals has thrown its hat into the coconut water ring, creating a 450 ml (15 oz.) offering that, like their other products, is not shelf-stable. The product has three ingredients, coconut water, evaporated cane juice, and citric acid, which result in the product having a noticeably different flavor than their single-ingredient competitors. Unfortunately, we’re not convinced that this approach is better, especially since the product loses the portability that you get from a Tetra Pak. Furthermore, the added sugar and citric acid take away the natural smoothness of young coconut water. Instead, you’ve got a mellow note of coconut, followed by some sweetness, before a slightly acidic note hits your tongue on the way out. We’re exactly not sure what the technical reasons are for this approach (US based production?), but simpler is better in our opinion. However, on the packaging front, Sunkist Naturals might have a leg up on some of the competition, with a resealable plastic bottle that feels like something for the mainstream. In addition, with the product being sold in produce aisles, they have an added point of differentiation that currently makes them the only coconut water found in that section of the store. Still, it’s hard to see this product (which is one of over a dozen in the Sunkist line) getting serious momentum versus the other coconut water brands. Overall, it’s good, but far from great, with the packaging currently the product’s strongest asset. Reviewed on: 11/6/2009

Lemonade

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 15.2 ounce
BevNET Review: From a flavor point of view, this is just about as close as you’ll get to what you could make with fresh lemons. Blending water, sugar, lemon juice, and lemon oil, the product delivers an on point mixture that’s sweet and refreshing, with just the right amount of lemon flavor and none of the filler juice that you’ll find in competing products. Plus, using lemon juice – as opposed to concentrate – gives the product a more accurate and authentic lemon flavor. Packaging is easily identifiable as lemonade, which is good because the choice of color for the “Lemonade” text is very easy to overlook. The 15.2 oz. curved bottle helps the product differentiate from the other juice players who mainly use square shapes, but fully wrapping the bottle (and not letting the consumer easily see the liquid) seems like a gamble for a product touting its cloudy juice. In addition, the tag line “100% pure squeezed” is too vague to be useful (“not from concentrate” is a better approach). Really, Sunkist should just be more straight with what’s inside this bottle – the best, most refreshing, not from concentrate lemonade there is. Calling out its vitamin C content (10% per serving) for what’s ultimately a refreshment product with 120 calories per serving (double that for the bottle) doesn’t seem like the best of ideas in the long run. Overall, this an exceptional product – if you take it for what it really is (a not from concentrate lemonade that tastes awesome). Reviewed on: 9/15/2009

Light Blackberry Blueberrry Smoothie

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Based on the full calorie version of the same name, this variety attempts to cut the calories by using sucralose in place of the higher apple juice content that's in the original. The result is a 57% juice blend that delivers decent fruit flavor, but has a touch of aftertaste to the finish. However, it's a tradeoff that we'd probably be willing to make, especially since this variety has a more modest 80 calories per serving. Packaging hits the mark as well, with visuals that clearly call attention to the fruit and the light, which are certainly the most important selling points of the product. Overall, the flavor is very good, but not great, but we really like the concept of a light smoothie.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

100% Valencia Orange

Product Type:Juice: Fruit Juice; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Like the Sunshine Carrot and Tangerine Juice varieties, this is a soundly executed product that will be enjoyable to those drinkers that enjoy orange juice. In this case, the product has no pulp, which also might impact one's enjoyment of the product. Otherwise, packaging is very attractive and we like the Sunkist brand name, which certainly goes well with a product like orange juice. Perhaps our only suggestion would be to darken the color used on the product name, which feels deemphasized in comparison to the brand logo.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Tangerine Juice

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container:
BevNET Review: Sunkist Naturals' Tangerine Juice is made with 100% tangerine juice. Compared with orange juice, this product is slightly more tart and has an astringent finish. Otherwise, the product tastes a bit more processed than super premium juices, but for a single serve, it's definitely a good choice. Packaging is attractive and clean, with vibrant images of tangerine slices taking up the majority of the front panel. If nothing else, it certainly has a fair amount of appetite whetting ability, which is something that should work in Sunkists' favor. Overall, this isn't the most interesting flavor of the lineup, but it's an enjoyable one nonetheless.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Sunshine Carrot

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Sunshine Carrot is a fancy name for a drink that's actually quite simple in nature. Using a three juice blend of orange, carrot, and apple juices, this 100% juice drink has a very natural, barely processed taste to it. Really, it's just a question of whether or not you like these three fruit juices because otherwise, the execution is spot on. Same goes for the packaging, which is a 15.2 ounce bottle that has vibrant graphics and proprietary shape. Definitely worth a try.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Golden Mango

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Sunkist Naturals' Golden Mango is a blend of mango, apple, orange, passion fruit, and banana juices. It's a 100% juice blend that delivers extremely enjoyable fruit flavor, which has a very fresh taste to it. As far as bottled smoothies go, this one is very well executed -- and probably beats out many fresh smoothies that we've had. Packaging is attractive and appealing, but the choice of color for the product's name is too light relative to the rest of the items on the front of the bottle. A simple change to a darker color would make this an almost perfect product.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Glorius Greens

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Every smoothie line since the days of Fresh Samantha and Odwalla has had a "green" flavor, and Sunkist has given it a shot with their Glorious Green product. Made with apple, kiwi, banana, mango and pineapple juices, this 100% juice blend also has 16 "essential greens." While we're not going to list all 16 right here, we will say that the product has a decidedly earthy finish to it. The most predominant flavors are the green tea and wheat grass, which make for a taste that is likely somewhat familiar to many smoothie drinkers. However, the earthy green flavor seems a bit more balanced compared to other similar products that we've tried. Our only concern is the level of calories, which hits about 300 for this 15.2 ounce bottle. Otherwise, it's loaded with vitamins and omega-3, which is certainly a marketable selling point. Package design is attractive, although we were surprised to see that they excluded any of the non-fruit elements on the label. Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Berry Cherry Bountiful

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: This variety has very pleasant fruit flavor, starting with strawberry, cherry, raspberry, apple, and banana. The depth of flavor is impressive, with tart, tangy, and sweet notes hitting your tongue. This drink is a sweet one, but the clean fruit flavor makes it obvious that this is the result of nature not added sugar. And it's that clean flavor paired with the complexity of the mix that make this one of our favorite flavors of the line. Like the other varieties, the packaging on this product is bright and attractive, with fruit images whetting your appetite and making you want to drink it. A very strong entry from Sunkist.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009

Berry Blue Bountiful

Product Type:Juice: Smoothie; Container: 15.2 fl oz
BevNET Review: Billed as a blueberry and blackberry smoothie, this variety has a bevy of fruit flavor crammed into a proprietary 15.2 ounce bottle. Apple, banana, blackberry, blueberry, and pineapple are easily distinguished from the mix, which has a slight thickness and a high level of sweetness (natural from the juice). There's probably a touch too much apple to the flavor, but otherwise we wouldn't change a thing. The drink is loaded with vitamins, but also calories, with 280 calories per bottle. That tradeoff might be an issue for this product, but otherwise it's an enjoyable product with almost flawless execution. The same can be said about the design of the package, which has a super premium look that's bolstered with vivid fruit images. Overall, Blueberry Bountiful is a super product.Reviewed on: 1/27/2009
