The Pop Shoppe

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

The PoP Shoppe today announced the launch of a NEW lineup of their iconic sodas, now made with pure cane sugar! The reformulation marks the first-ever change to The PoP Shoppe’s product lineup since its inception in 1969. Created in response to customer feedback to remove high fructose corn syrup from their eight flavor lineup, The PoP Shoppe’s Cane Sugar sodas are now available throughout the US. CEO Brian Alger plans to launch the new Cane Sugar line in Canada in late 2012.

Cola

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Of the Pop Shoppe lineup, the cola variety was our favorite. They’ve done a nice job delivering classic cola flavor that’s sweetened with cane sugar. While there’s nothing really notable or extraordinary about what they’ve put in this product, it definitely is a nice choice if you are going to indulge in a full calorie soda. The packaging, which is a 12 oz. proprietary glass bottle, has bucked the trend of long neck bottles and gone for a short and squat appearance. While they seem to be going for a vintage angle with their product, the original Pop Shoppe bottle from the late 1960’s (a taller bottle) would have made this product have more appeal. We say this not only because of aesthetics, but it also makes the product look smaller than a standard long neck bottle. Overall, this is a nice tasting product, but we’re not convinced that this is the best bottle for what they are trying to achieve.Reviewed on: 3/14/2012

Root Beer

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Our feelings about Pop Shoppe’s Root Beer flavor are very similar to that of the Cola flavor. Specifically, what’s inside the bottle, which, in this case, is a classic root beer with a slight note of wintergreen to the finish, is very enjoyable. The outside, which is a proprietary 12 oz. glass bottle, is an attempt to create a vintage look for the brand (perhaps with a modern spin). For us, sticking with the original Pop Shoppe bottle or another long neck design would have made this product feel more authentic and appealing. Otherwise, the squat bottle feels smallish (despite being the same size as every other soda) and seems like it will visually get lost on a store shelf. Overall, it’s a good product, but we feel as though a better bottle choice could be made.Reviewed on: 3/14/2012

Lime Ricky

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Pop Shoppe’s Lime Ricky flavor is a sugary lime-flavored soda that is packaged in a vintage looking bottle. The taste of the drink seems like it’s 90 percent of what it needs to be (we’d say the same for the Black Cherry flavor), with something missing from the finish of the drink to help balance things out. But the neon green color of the liquid is a bit much and takes away from the look of the product (the red of the logo and green of the liquid make it almost look like candy). Otherwise, we can only reiterate that the squat look of the bottle, despite being unique, gives the product a smallish appearance and creates the illusion that it’s smaller than a 12 oz. bottle. Overall, this flavor seems like a good fit for the brand, but it definitely needs some refinement.Reviewed on: 3/14/2012

Cream Soda

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Regular; Container: 12 oz Glass
BevNET Review: With its bright red coloring, Pop Shoppe’s Cream Soda is what we’d describe as a “spiced cream soda.” Unfortunately, this formulation leaves something to be desired, with 45g of sugar (like the other flavors), loads of red coloring, and a flavor that honestly would be better if it were just straight cream soda. On the visual end of things, our concerns about the bottle (noted in the Root Beer and Cola reviews) are compounded by the red liquid making the logo blend in with the background. Unfortunately, we’re not big fans of this variety.Reviewed on: 3/14/2012
