Green Tea w/Honey

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 24 oz Can
BevNET Review: Of the Tradewinds tea varieties, this one is the most different of the bunch. For starters, it uses brewed green tea instead of black tea, while also utilizing a blend of honey and sugar as its sweeteners. It’s a welcome departure from the rest of the lineup, but they have managed to keep the baseline for “sweet” consistent with this product. As far as green tea beverages go, this is very mainstream-oriented, with minimal grassy flavor and a pleasant note of honey at the drink’s finish. On the outside, the massive 23 oz. can is a bit overwhelming (there’s also a 20 oz. bottle), although for 99 cents, it’s definitely a good value. Plus, we really like the graphics that they’ve created. Aside from the use of a green color, which offers nice contrast to the other products, the imagery is well executed and seems appropriate for an all natural tea product. Overall, this is one of the more enjoyable products in the line.

Extra Sweet Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 24 oz Can
BevNET Review: If regular Sweet Tea just isn’t sweet enough for you (or maybe you feel the need more sugar or calories in your diet), then Tradewinds has this offering, Extra Sweet Tea, that might be for you. Seriously though, this product is VERY sweet, almost to the point where tasting the tea becomes difficult after a few mouthfuls of the product. For the 23 oz. can (a non-resealable container that is supposedly three servings' worth), there are 87 grams of sugar and 360 calories per can. While we’re sure that there are some sugar junkies out there who might like this product, it seems like an unnecessary entry in this day and age.

Fruit Punch

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 24 oz Can
BevNET Review: Unlike the other flavors of Tradewinds, which are all-natural, the Tradewinds “Tropical” sub-brand uses sucralose as one of its sweeteners. This flavor, along with the Mango variety, does not contain any tea, either. The result is a product that is lower in calories (150 per 23 oz. can), but still very sweet, while the fruit flavor of this product does not taste accurate at all. Instead, this product has a very candy-like flavor, which is certainly not up to par with the rest of the brand. Still, for the extremely value conscious consumer, this product is sure to catch some eyeballs – 99 cents for 23 ounces is a deal. One thing that we really do like about this product is the design of the can. It is above and beyond what’s out there today, both in terms of the visual appeal and the simplicity of the product’s messaging. Overall, we’re far from in love with the flavor, but the packaging is definitely something that we’d take notice of.

Sweet Tea (can)

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 24 oz Can
BevNET Review: Tradewinds’ Sweet Tea is a simple combination of black tea and sugar. It’s an enjoyable interpretation of the Southern classic, with a good amount of black tea making its way to your palate. They’ve been pretty heavy handed with the sugar (as sweet tea is supposed to be), while a touch of citric acid gives the product a slight acidic note to the finish. The acidic note is probably the only difference between this product and what you might make at home, but it’s not something that really impacts the overall experience. On the outside, the massive 23 oz. can, which has 99 cents painted on the label, is clearly a value play. However, it’s the nicest looking can design that we’ve seen in the RTD tea category. The design is clean and has very nice looking graphics, complete with a Caribbean beach scene that gives the product an inviting look. Overall, we’re not sure about the 23 ounce and 99 cents approach (we might opt for the 20 oz bottle that’s also available), but this is a well executed mainstream tea.

Lemon Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 20 oz PET
BevNET Review: Tradewinds’ Lemon Tea is a straightforward blend of sugar sweetened black tea and lemon flavoring. It’s on par with countless other sugar sweetened tea brands, with a full bodied base of black tea that is followed with a liberal amount of sugar. The lemon flavor is clearly derived from flavorings, but it’s sufficient for a drink of this caliber. The packaging is a 20 oz. PET (a 23 oz. can is also available), which now has a Caribbean beach landscape as its background. The execution of this design is an improvement over previous Tradewinds efforts, both in appeal and quality. Overall, it’s a solid entry into the tea category, but given that the flavor is so similar to other products, we think it will take some effort to get a loyal following for this product.

Lemonade Tea

Product Type:Tea: Sweetened; Container: 20 oz PET
BevNET Review: Compared with Lemon Tea, this product seems like the superior entry, starting with the fact that it contains actual juice (pear and lemon). Otherwise, this product is the same as the majority of the flavors in the Tradewinds line: medium bodied black tea and a hefty amount of sweetness. However, the increased lemon flavor does make a big difference, making for a lighter bodied product that’s more refreshing and easier to drink. That being said, we’re not sure if this brand really needs two flavors that are so similar – and we’d stick with this one. Definitely one of the better black tea flavors in the lineup.
