Pure Prana

Product Type:Functional: Energy Shot; Container: 3oz Shot
BevNET Review: Tumeric Alive’s “Pure Prana” is their foray into the shot category. They’ve stuck very close to the core product, with a formulation that appears to be a literal (or nearly literal) translation of their original product, but with less water added. It’s raw and organic, featuring ingredients that include coconut nectar, lemon juice, turmeric, ginger, sea salt, ashwagandha, yerba mate, coconut oil, tulsi, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, and spearmint. In terms of flavor, this product is quite intense, with a very potent hit of turmeric and sweetness to start things off. From there, the gold colored liquid has notes of ginger and spice, with a slight touch of citrus and salt to round things out. We thoroughly enjoyed the complex and wholesome flavor of this product -- it’s definitely not your average shot. On the functional side of things, it’s not exactly an energy shot, we definitely felt some kick from consuming this product. Beyond that, the product has 73 calories, 16g of sugar, 6g of fiber, 600mg of potassium, and 240mg of sodium. Visually, their packaging is relatively clean and simple, with a 3 oz. white bottle that has a blue cap. The label is text heavy, but it’s no worse than anything else we’ve seen come packaged in this size bottle. However, we would like to see them make the brand name a bit more integrated with the name of the product (we think it would be easy to think that it’s Pure Prana’s Tumeric shot rather than the reverse). Overall, a very unique and enjoyable product, despite a few small concerns. Reviewed on: 10/16/2012

Vegan Coconut Nectar

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 12 fl oz
BevNET Review: Tumeric Alive’s Vegan Coconut Nectar is a blend of raw turmeric, ginger, coconut nectar, lemon, salt, cinnamon, cayenne, and other spices. From a flavor perspective, the product has heavy notes of turmeric, ginger, and lemon, with a subtle sweetness and a lingering heat to the finish. We only detected a hint of coconut in the first sip of the product -- the heat from the ginger and cayenne quickly made it disappear. All in all, this variety is quite enjoyable -- as far as turmeric based beverages go. Those new to the concept, however, are probably going to feel a bit of a shock to see that this orange liquid (which looks like mango juice) has such a complex spiced flavor. Visually, the small (12 oz.) size is perfect for this product, but we feel as though the label still needs improvement. Specifically, the vertical placement of the logo requires you to turn the bottle AND we’re somewhat confused by the name “Tumeric” (as opposed to just “Turmeric”). Otherwise, there’s simply too much going on with the label, including callouts for “vegan” (which all comparable drinks are) and “yoga in a bottle” (which isn’t explained). Regardless of what they call it, more effort needs to be made to establish the brand. Overall, a very unique and enjoyable flavor profile, but the branding isn’t quite there yet. Vibrant Vanilla Bean

Product Type:Juice: Juice Drink; Container: 12 oz
BevNET Review: Tumeric’s “Vibrant Vanilla Bean” variety shares a relatively similar base formulation to the other varieties, but lists “whole vanilla bean” as an additional ingredient. In terms of flavor, this product is spicy (we’d classify it as “mild bordering on medium” heat”) and complex, with turmeric, ginger, lemon, spearmint, honey, cayenne and vanilla as the primary flavors that we taste. However, as with most spicy products, the more you drink, the more the heat takes over and eliminates your palate’s ability to pick up the other flavors. Still, it’s a very well executed formulation and one that is both refreshing and satisfying to the senses. And since it’s a raw product made with simple ingredients, it feels very nourishing and cleansing. On the outside, the 12 oz. clear plastic bottle feels like a good size and format for a product of this type. Plus, it helps keep the product’s price point within the realm of regular beverages (about $5). The label emphasizes the ingredients and raw nature of the product, but the actual brand name feels somewhat lost in the design. Furthermore, we think that making “Turmeric Alive” the brand name (instead of “Tumeric the Elixir of Life”) would help clarify what the product is and, if given proper design treatment, feel more like an actual brand (it has a somewhat generic vibe to it right now). Overall, a really enjoyable and unique product, but the branding needs to be improved.Reviewed on: 8/24/2012
