Initially the best Cream Soda ive ever Tasted. But did they change?
Upon first trying this I was in awww at how amazing it was. I spent the next month spending lots of money on the warm creamy taste with just the right bite. I loved it at room temperature. Unfortunately the past few 4 packs ive tried has a different taste/smell. And it is definitely a downgrade. Im hoping that its just a "bad batch" but im concerned they slightly changed their prep methods which has changed the taste. Assuming your drinking the Virgil's that I came to love, I give it a 5 as it was amazing.
This cream soda is probably the best of all and I ended up buying 24 through their on-line website. It's $1.50 a bottle when you divide the price by the bottles.
It uses unbleached cane sugar and caramelized cane sugar to sweeten and the vanilla flavor is very deep, intense and real.
It's 160 calories for a 12 Oz. bottle so it's right there with all the others (I believe its 20 less than mountain dew though).
All in all this is a great drink and the glass bottle also does its part in making sure you know the drink is special. I also love the fact that they don't use inject-based carbonation because the bubbles are smaller and last longer.
I personally think that both Virgil's Root Beers are high-quality, expensive swill (I realize I'm in the minority here), but their Cream is kickin'. Natural sweeteners (including unrefined sugar) and flavors combine to make one of my favorite creams and the one I enjoy most often. I still prefer Manhattan Special (in a class by itself), but it's hard to find in Manhattan and this one isn't. It's a tad too sweet (which cost it a half-star), but the mouthfeel is clean and the unrefined sugar lends a darker, more complex flavor than is found in other creams, hence it's more interesting. I'm hoping to run across the new Black Cherry Cream soon; I expect I'll enjoy it just as much as I do this one.
This has a true vanilla bean taste, not just flavoring like other creme sodas. It is very mellow with a nice finish. The level of carbonation and sweetening is right on target with the cane sugar difference. A must try.
