DIet Black Cherry Cream Soda

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: This is the standout flavor of the line. Using a perfectly balanced mixture of flavors (cream soda and black cherry), natural sweeteners in the form of stevia and xylitol, and herbal ingredients, this flavor hits the ball out of the park in terms of creating a full strength flavor with only 6 calories per bottle. Again, our only concern is the packaging, which isn't assertive enough in how it promotes the natural flavors and is hard to read based on the choice of colors and the contrast between the "Diet Black Cherry" and "Cream Soda" text. Still, if it's taste that makes people drink CSDs -- and we think it is -- this is a product that consumers will get hooked on once they try it. If they could spruce up the design, this would be a five star beverage.

Diet Cream Soda

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: Diet Cream Soda is one of those flavors that's tough to pull off -- but Virgil's has certainly made a valiant effort with their all natural stevia and xylitol sweetened product. The product has a decent amount of cream flavor to it, but it unfortunately gives way to a sweetener aftertaste, limiting the depth and complexity of what would otherwise be a great tasting product. However, going up against other diet sodas, this one is still ahead of the pack in terms of flavor, which is due to those high quality ingredients and choice of sweeteners. Packaging feels like what you'd expect from a premium CSD, although the lack of differentiation between the flavors could prove to be an issue. Plus, they don't call any attention to the drink's herbal contents, which could be a missed opportunity.

Diet Real Cola

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: When we saw a sugar free cola as part of the Virgil's Diet lineup, we were honestly quite skeptical. Honestly, we've can't recall ever having a diet cola that didn't leave a bad taste in our mouth. Fortunately though, this product is a notch above diet colas that have gone before it. The flavor is sweet and crisp, with a high quality cola flavor that has more depth than what we typically see in a diet cola. The use of stevia and xylitol as sweeteners gets the job done, allowing the product to remain all natural and delivering an impressively accurate sweetness. Packaging is the only area that feels a bit weak, with a look that fits the Virgil's Root Beer line better than it does a cola. Plus, there's something about the color choices that makes it a bit hard to read. Overall, impressive taste, but we think they've sold themselves a bit short with the product design.

Diet Root Beer

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz glass
BevNET Review: Virgil's Diet Root Beer is an enjoyable translation of the flagship Virgil's flavor, but it is definitely no substitute. The flavor is crisp and has a slight bit of creaminess to it, but the sweetness leaves a slight aftertaste and hurts the richness of the product. Still, if we are to compare this to other diet root beers that we've had, this is the winner hands down. Plus, the mix of stevia and xylitol is certain to win over the type of consumers who appreciates what Virgil's is all about. Packaging, is a decent adaptation of the classic Virgil's look and is one that certainly feels like that of a micro root beer. However, there isn't enough differentiation between the diet flavors, making it somewhat hard to tell the difference from afar. Overall, a very enjoyable and innovative product.
