Vita Coco’s riff on the most popular sports drink flavor is this product, “Lemon-Lime.” The company started with a base of coconut water and added water, sugar, flavors, sea salt, ascorbic acid and fruit juice (for color). To that end, the flavor of this product is more or less what you’d expect from a combination of a sports drink and coconut water. That’s not to say that it isn’t good (it truly is). Instead, it’s more a statement on other products that have attempted to do the same but just haven’t gotten the flavor quite right. So, while other coconut water sports drinks haven’t had massive success, this one at least has the liquid to a point where it’s a very easy transition from a typical sports drink. Nutritionally, this product has about the same caloric content as a Gatorade, but it has less sugar and more electrolytes. Packaging is a contoured 18 oz. plastic bottle. It has a nice feeling in the hand (it certainly feels “sporty”) and the placement of the label near the top of the bottle works nicely. The adaptation of the Vita Coco logo steers away from the technical look of most sports drinks and instead feels like something a little less serious (like beach volleyball). All in all, this is a well thought out and well-executed product that is probably the best coconut water sports drink that we’ve seen to date.
