High Voltage Beverages is located in Charlotte, NC. It's run by two entrepreneurs, Bill Sipper and Owen Ryan. Ryan created the VOLT® brand in 1997 and over the years he carefully researched it with consumers across America. Fruit Punch Shock

BevNET Review: Volt has created another nice flavor with this variety, a fruit punch flavored drink that’s been kissed with guarana, ginseng, and taurine for a hit of energy. It’s a moderately sweetened product, with mellow fruit flavoring and a crisp finish. Labeled as a “high intensity refreshment” and featuring the words “energizing” and “shock”, the product is trying to position itself as the middle road between caffeinated CSDs (e.g. Mountain Dew) and traditional energy drinks. From an energy point of view, it’s hard to gauge just where it fits, but from a flavor and branding point of view, it fits the bill. On the other hand, being so closely aligned with the CSD category (which is in perpetual decline) seems like a move that will make the road ahead challenging for this brand. Still, between the strangely addictive flavor and clean design, it’s a product that we think is good enough to have a decent run in this category. Reviewed on: 4/20/2009

Mango Shock

BevNET Review: Of the new flavors, this was the only one that we couldn’t identify by flavor alone. In this case, “tropical mango” actually tastes more like “peach mango.” Plus, it almost has a candy-like flavor to it. In our opinion, this variety could use some work. Perhaps going more in the direction of “orange mango,” would make for a more palatable – and marketable – offering.Reviewed on: 4/20/2009

Pineapple Shock

BevNET Review: With a sweet tropical pineapple flavor and a crisp finish, this flavor of Volt is surprisingly addictive. Unlike other pineapple flavored CSDs that we’ve tried, this variety isn’t as sweet, which is a good thing, and it has an “energy drink” bite to it (there’s added guarana, ginseng, and taurine). Factoring in the product’s use of high fructose corn syrup, the product has a very mainstream feel to it. The same can be said for the packaging, which looks very much like what we’d expect to see from one of the big guys, rather than an independent. Matching the color of the liquid with the accent color on the logo gives it a polished and attractive look. Overall, it’s not the highest quality CSD out there, but they’ve accomplished what they were going for: a very marketable beverage that’s pleasant to drink and offers a hit of energy.Reviewed on: 4/20/2009

Energizing Citrus Shock

BevNET Review: Using a 20 ounce bottle that looks and feels very much like what you'd expect from the "big guys," Volt is a modest effort to create an energy enhanced CSD. They've taken four of the most popular energy drink ingredients (guarana, ginseng, taurine, and caffeine) and paired it with an original tasting citrus flavor. We're not sure if it's the touch of orange juice or just a good choice of flavorings, but the product has a more smooth flavor that's quite enjoyable, with the only exception being the drink's slightly syrupy finish. Label is good, but as previously cited, feels like something made by a large CSD company and not an independent. Perhaps it's the generic sounding name or the label design, but we're on the fence as to whether a mainstream CSD entry with a touch of energy flare is the best of product's to launch right now. Still, for CSD drinkers who want something different, Volt is a solid entry.Reviewed on: 10/29/2008

Diet Energizing Citrus Shock

Product Type:Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 20 fl oz
BevNET Review: With a cleaner and crisper flavor, the Diet variety of Volt is actually more impressive than its "regular" counterpart. The product relies on the popular blend of ace-k and sucralose, which gives the product a very natural level of sweetness and minimal aftertaste. A touch of fruit juice has been added, which may account for the product's unique citrus flavor, and they've also punched things up with caffeine, taurine, ginseng, and guarana. While the amounts aren't listed on the label, those additives should have some pull with the target consumer. Speaking of label design, the product has a very mainstream feeling to it, almost to the point where we'd expect a Coke or Pepsi to be behind it rather than a start up. Overall, an enjoyable diet CSD with the added benefits of energy.Reviewed on: 10/29/2008
