Zo-Cal Berry Lemonade

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Diet; Container: 16 oz Can
BevNET Review: Of the Vuka Zo-Cal flavors that we sampled, Berry Lemonade was the best of the bunch. It utilizes a pretty standard-tasting (at least in terms of the energy drink category) mix of berry and lemon flavors that have been sweetened with stevia. While the carbonation and fruit flavors help cut it somewhat, the stevia aftertaste is a definite issue for this product. Functionally, the “Workout” blend includes natural caffeine (80mg), vitamins (B vitamins), calcium, and electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, and sodium). This seems relatively straightforward, blending elements of an energy drink with those of a sports drink. Packaging is a 16 oz. metal bottle, which has been left largely unpainted. The silver color of the product looks modern and chic, with simple looking graphic elements that leave the product feeling clean and uncluttered. However, there’s nothing about the brand that really jumps out at you, especially with the disconnected text elements that have been placed on the lower portion of front panel. And, most importantly, the flavor name is the final and smallest element. Giving this more visibility would definitely be helpful. Overall, this product is really all about the metal bottle. Otherwise, the flavor and function seem very much run of the mill. Reviewed on: 1/3/2012

Zo-Cal Orange

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Diet; Container: 16 oz Can
BevNET Review: Vuka Zo-Cal Orange is a non-carbonated energy drink that is enhanced with natural caffeine, B Vitamins, Vitamin C, and zinc. The orange flavor tastes like the standard orange flavoring used in many other beverages. The formulation uses stevia as the only sweetener, which gives the product a somewhat harsh aftertaste. Otherwise, we don’t really understand why this variety is the only non-carbonated flavor -- it seems like it would taste better if it had some carbonated bite to it. Functionally, the product is on par with other energy drinks out there in terms of caffeine content (80mg), but the sub function of “awaken” doesn’t seem to add anything to the product (it’s not clear what it is). On the packaging front, the use of a shiny silver 16 oz. metallic bottle gives the product a visual point of differentiation and a modern vibe. However, it makes the text on the back (which explains what makes Vuka diferent) hard to read. Otherwise, we’d like to see more emphasis on the flavor and less on the sub function. Overall, the packaging is nice looking and adds a point of differentiation, but this product would definitely benefit from improvement to the flavor.Reviewed on: 1/3/2012

Think (Pomegranate Lychee)

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 16 oz bottle
BevNET Review: The “Think” formulation of the Vuka lineup is also the Pomegranate Lychee flavored variety. From a flavor point of view, it doesn’t exactly taste like pomegranate or lychee, but we see their influences in the included flavors. The product has a pleasant fruit flavor, with a decent amount of carbonation and a slight functional note to the finish. Vuka Think is also a sweet tasting product, with about 46g of sugar per bottle that’s from added pure cane and beet sugars. Functional ingredients include DMAE, ginkgo biloba, panax ginseng, natural caffeine, B vitamins, and grape seed extract. Packaging is a striking looking 16 oz. aluminum bottle that has a dark purple tone. What do we make of all this? Aside from the flavor being enjoyable, albeit CSD-like, we’re left wondering who this drink is really speaking to. The sweet flavor seems counter to the more healthy sounding “intelligent energy” tag, while the formulation itself is still heavily reliant on caffeine with 160mg per 16 oz. bottle. That leaves us feeling as though the “Think” element of the formulation is largely going to be ignored, with consumers simply choosing a flavor that pleases their palate. Lastly, there’s the packaging, which has a very polished looking feeling to it, although the purple backdrop makes it very hard to read the black lettering on the front. In addition, we’re not yet big fans of the Vuka name, which has a strange sound as it rolls off your tongue. Overall, this product has decent taste and function as far as energy drinks are concerned, but we think that they need more than aluminum packaging or added functional ingredients to build a loyal following of this particular flavor.Reviewed on: 12/4/2009

Awaken (Orange)

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 16 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Made with 50% juice, Vuka’s Awaken Orange flavored formulation is, as you might have guessed by the name “Awaken,' designed to be consumed in the morning. The juice blend for the drink, which includes white grape, apple, pear, and orange, provides the majority of the flavor for the drink. It has a fair amount of orange flavor to the mix, with the white grape and apple flavors also providing a note or two. Behind that, you’ve got a non-carbonated base that’s been sweetened with cane sugar and beet sugars, which gives the drink a good amount of sweetness and 44g of sugar per bottle. Functionally, the product has 160mg of caffeine per bottle, as well as added B vitamins, vitamin C, calcium, vitamin E, grape seed extract, white tea polyphenols, panax ginseng, zinc, and vitamin A. All in all, what’s inside the bottle isn’t exactly new or innovative (AM formulations have been around a while now), but its execution is on par with the competition's. Plus, of the Vuka lineup, we’re fondest of this product’s packaging, thanks to the orange hue that pairs nicely with the colors of the Vuka logo. This makes for something that looks like a cohesive design, whereas the others have a somewhat forced feeling to them. This gives the product a bright, positive vibe, which catches the eye from afar and gives the product an appealing, almost palate-whetting appearance. Overall, the best of the Vuka line.Reviewed on: 12/4/2009

Workout (Berry Lemonade)

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 16 oz bottle
BevNET Review: From a flavor perspective, this product has a very sweet and carbonated berry lemonade flavor that’s certainly too sugary (to the tune of 44g of sugar) to consume before or during a workout. Unfortunately, the berry lemonade flavor tastes just like flavoring, with neither the lemon or berry flavors tasting like what you’d get from juice. Aside from having 160mg of caffeine per bottle, the product’s key functional ingredient is rooibos tea, but it fails to further explain how that “keeps you performing at peak levels.” In addition, they’ve fortified the drink with B vitamins, L-carnitine, and electrolytes. However, none of this lets us get past the sweetness of the drink, which is just too strong given the purpose of the drink. As far as the packaging goes, we like their use of a 16 ounce aluminum bottle, especially since this a resealable top to the product. In addition, the red color scheme is one of the more appealing and eye catching of the Vuka line. However, we’re left feeling like they could actually add some additional text to the front panel, especially if they can figure out some way to tie the workout together with the “intelligent energy” tag line. Overall, it’s conceptually good, but the product is still in need of refinement. Reviewed on: 11/25/2009

Renew (Mango Peach)

Product Type:Functional: Energy Drink: Regular; Container: 16 oz bottle
BevNET Review: Mango Peach is one of the better tasting flavors of the Vuka line. The lightly carbonated formulation starts off with a pleasant tropical aroma, which sets the stage nicely for the drink’s pleasant tasting mango and peach flavors. It’s crisp and clean, with a moderate amount of sweetness that works well with the drink’s tart finish. As far as functionality goes, the drink has 160mg of caffeine, which is unquestionably its strongest attribute. Otherwise, the product has B vitamins, D-Ribose, taurine, and ginseng, making this Vuka’s most traditional energy formulation. With 160mg of caffeine per bottle, it’s got a fair amount of kick to it, so that alone should give its formulation credibility. The exterior of the product follows the same format as the other flavors of Vuka, with a 16 ounce wide mouth aluminum bottle that’s nice looking as well as practical thanks to the use of a resealable top. That being said, there are some things that we’d change, particularly the use of white text for the word “Renew” and the small font size for the flavor name. In addition, we’re not really convinced that the word “renew” should be more dominant than “energy,” which is ultimately what’s going to sell this product. While the current rendition of the product is enjoyable end has kick to it, it would be a lot better if the package more clearly communicated the fact that this is an energy drink.
