Wolfgang Puck Iced Coffee

Manufacturer's Brand Overview [Edit]

Great coffee and great food go hand in hand. To me, there is something truly wonderful about enjoying a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. It takes me back to my days growing up in Austria, where drinking coffee in traditional cafes was elevated to an art form. Recently, it became a mission of mine to create a true coffee experience in a bottle for you to enjoy in your home, in your office or on the go. Working closely with Sherry Yard, my colleague and executive pastry chef at Spago, we went through several incarnations before settling on final recipes that truly represented my culinary style. And thus my Culinary Iced Coffees were born. The coffees we selected are sourced from some of the world’s best, certified organic coffee farms in Ethiopia, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. The flavor and aroma are what you might expect from a cup of freshly brewed French Roast espresso. And my favorite part, of course, was getting in the kitchen and creating the four delicious flavors. We borrowed ideas and ingredients from some of our favorite desserts like chocolate mousse, meringue, caramel, Tahitian vanilla and crème brulée. We believe the four flavors we developed have just the right ratio of milk, sugar, and organic ingredients to create a well balanced and refreshing chilled coffee drink that you can enjoy anywhere and at anytime. So it is with pride and pleasure that I invite you to go on a culinary journey with me while you sip and savor one of my Wolfgang Puck Culinary Iced Coffees. Cheers, my friends!

Cafe au Lait

Product Type:Coffee Drinks; Container: 8.5 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Using a USDA Organic certified formulation, the most recent rendition of Wolf Gang Puck’s base latte is definitely an improvement over past efforts. The flavor is rich and creamy, with a moderate amount of sweetness from the addition of sugar. Despite having only 120 calories per 8.5 ounce bottle, the product feels rather heavy in the mouth, while the bitterness of the coffee and a burnt note to the milk create a noticeable aftertaste. That being said, this product feels purely average, with a flavor that we feel like we’ve had in countless other RTD coffee brands. Like many other entrants into the RTD coffee space, that leaves this product trying to compete with category leader Starbucks Frappuccino on packaging and branding. That’s a tough act to follow, especially when this product is actually 1 oz smaller than the competing Starbucks product. And, it’s tough to imagine that the Wolfgang Puck brand, while certainly a very good one in the food space, will be able to hold its own against a brand known worldwide for coffee. So, we have a tough time understanding where this product fits, aside from niche markets where there’s no coffee currently being sold OR where being USDA Organic (which Starbucks is not) is a different maker, such as the natural channel. Overall, it’s a decent product, but it’s still going to play second fiddle.Reviewed on: 9/2/2010

Creme Caramel

Product Type:Coffee Drinks; Container: 8.5 oz Glass
BevNET Review: The Crème Caramel variety of Wolfgang Puck Iced Coffee is definitely one of their better flavors. Again, it comes down to restraint with the addition of flavors, which in this case refers to the fact that the caramel flavoring is definitely not as strong as competing products. As a result, the product has a nice balance to it, with the caramel flavoring doing its job and complementing the flavor of the milk and coffee mixture. There’s just enough of both flavors, with the mildly sweetened, milky coffee base hitting your tongue first, followed by the indulgent flavor of caramel. If anything, we might like a bit more coffee flavor as it’s bordering on tasting like flavored milk as opposed to coffee. On the packaging front, they’ve created something that looks very clean and professional, with a nicely arranged front panel that makes good use of the Wolfgang Puck brand equity. They’ve decided to use a smaller package than the completion, which is a definite risk, although their explanation for this appears to be one of portion control (“only 120 calories”). How well this will work against the powerful Starbucks brand is hard to say, although we suspect that lower calories and a USDA Organic formulation will at least get this product a chance in the health and natural channels. Definitely our favorite flavor of the brand. Reviewed on: 9/2/2010

Double Blend Mocha

Product Type:Coffee Drinks; Container: 8.5 oz Glass
BevNET Review: Typically, we’re pretty fond of mocha flavored iced coffee products, which is the result of the chocolate helping to balance some of the bitterness from the coffee. In this case, something tastes slightly off, with the mocha flavor (which they call “Viennese chocolate”) giving the product an almost sour note to it. Plus, the chocolate flavor is very muted, which is something that was definitely not expected with the word “double” in the flavor name. In any event, this variety needs a lot of work. Definitely our least favorite flavor of the brand.Reviewed on: 9/2/2010

Vanilla Fusion

Product Type:Coffee Drinks; Container: 8.5 oz Glass
BevNET Review: While we’re not quite sure what the word “Fusion” means in the flavor name (this is just vanilla flavored iced coffee, right?), this product is one of the better executed flavors of the Wolfgang Puck Iced Coffee lineup. While vanilla flavored RTD iced coffee typically scores pretty low with us, this one is quite enjoyable, which is the direct result of the product having a more muted vanilla flavor. So, instead of smacking you in the face with vanilla flavor, this one actually complements the coffee flavor, resulting in a smooth flavor from start to finish. There’s a decent amount of sweetness to this 120 calorie product, but it’s not so sweet to the point of it leaving a sugary aftertaste. The use of a USDA Organic certified formulation is certainly a plus for some channels, so placing this logo on the front of the bottle seems like a smart idea. However, going with an 8.5 oz format to Starbucks Frappuccino’s 9.5 oz seems risky. Otherwise, the package is nice looking and classy (a Wolfgang Puck silhouette is better than a full photo), although it doesn’t really jump out at you. Overall, it tastes nice, but neither the flavor or packaging are overly memorable, so we foresee this product doing best in places where USDA Organic is important or where Starbucks has underserved the market (if such a thing exists). Worth a try.Reviewed on: 9/2/2010
