Zevia: Natural Cola

Natural Cola

Last Updated: 6/18/2009 10:07 AM

Product Type: Carbonated Soft Drink: Diet; Container: 12 oz can
BevNET Review: A lot has changed since we first took a look at this brand, including the market for stevia and the FDA regulations that regulate it. Gone is the supplement panel and the original can design, and in its place is a brand that feels much more mainstream and marketable. Flavor wise, it tastes better than we remember, with a more natural level of sweetness and less aftertaste (although there is still some from the stevia, despite being cut with erythritol). The cola flavor is better than what you’d find in a Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi, with a more natural and balanced taste. Zevia’s packaging cleanup makes a big difference as well, with a more appealing and hip look that seems a bit more marketable than the original format. That, paired with the fact that there’s more widespread demand for stevia, makes the opportunity for this product much bigger. Really, the only question we have for the brand is whether or not it should be in the same 12 oz. can as the big guys. A slim can or glass bottle might help take this brand to new levels.

Better then other diet sodas
2 stars2 stars2 stars2 stars2 stars

Zevia is definitely an improvement over other diet sodas, not as harsh and no after taste. A bit "wet" (i.e., no dry) but no nasty after-taste. However you can taste the erythritol mid-way through a sip. Having erythritol (more of it then stevia) is sort of counter the point of stevia. Frankly a very small amount of agave would be better for taste. I could live with 20 calories.

HORRIBLE

I'm not sure why some people even like it, its horrible! It burns while going down and then you have to deal with the "fake-sweetener" aftertast! Yuck!

from root to cola

Ergh, I don't know what to say really, but if you can deal with flat soda flavor, this is for you, this is one of now 5 drinks I had, only the ginger ale and surprisingly twist is worse! Like many, a weak taste, but close to most diet drinks... As with all I tried, 20 calories of real drink perks it up, and makes it much better, im sorry if that calorie count is scary, but some 7up with this even at minimal levels makes it ok, the drink itself is rather bad, with a terrible aftertaste, (I thought this would be the best!)

the right kind of sweet
5 stars5 stars5 stars5 stars5 stars

People often complain about this not being sweet enough. I think the problem is people are used to the overly-sweetened HFCS flavors of popular soda lines. This is the way carbonated beverages should taste. And once you start these, you'll find that Pepsi, Coke, etc, are too sweet and actually kind of disgusting. Plus, Zevia is much better for you. I recommend it to anyone!

LOVE THIS SODA

I love this soda. I can finally indulge without feeling guilty. For the critics out there I think they just didn't give it a chance. Like anything else you have to get used to it. When I decided to switch from coke to Diet Coke I didn't think I would be able to. I positively hated the taste of DIet Coke but was determined to switch thinking it would help me lose weight. I stuck to it and eventually regular coke tasted awful to me. THE same thing with this stuff yeah its a different sweetener so first reaction is to dislike it , but trust me now when I taste A diet coke I think the sweet aftertaste is awful.

NO JUNK = HIGHER PRICE
2 stars2 stars2 stars2 stars2 stars

If only good stuff could be priced like the sodas containing High Fructose corn syrup, asparatame, etc. I don't think you can possibly reach the "average joe" with this one, but I will enjoy a can now and then. Good luck!

Good Taste...WAY Overpriced
3 stars3 stars3 stars3 stars3 stars

Great soda but horribly overpriced. $6 to $6.50 a six pack? Ridiculous. This really needs to be priced in the $3-$3.50 range per six pack. If Zevia wants to go mainstream they need to do it before Coke and Pepsi come out with their Stevia sweetened versions...and they will.

suprised at the neg reviews

Wow I'm surprised some people hate this stuff. I say you just gotta give it a try it to find out if you're a lover or hater. At some health food stores they sell single cans -- give it a try. The other flavors are good too. I wouldn't touch aspartame or splenda or corn syrup (almost always GMO) with a 10 foot pole. This stuff could taste worse than diet coke and I'd still drink it -- but honestly it tastes better.

Tastes like Coke Zero

It pretty much tastes exactly like Coke Zero. I thought Stevia was supposed to taste better than aspartame. I guess not.

Great, healthy soda alternative
5 stars5 stars5 stars5 stars5 stars

Since being diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago, I completely changed my diet. This meant no sugar and no artificial ingredients, which pretty much means no soda. With stevia as the sweetener, and all natural ingredients, I can now enjoy a soda on occasion when others are also drinking sodas. Taste wise, it's better than any diet cola I've ever drank (I never liked the taste of aspartame) and I've never tried sucralose. Sure, I used to love Pepsi, but Zevia is a great alternative. The only negative is the price, but hopefully it will catch on and some larger supermarkets will start carrying it and bring down the price to be the same as the major brands.
