Job Overview

The Director of Production is responsible for managing the full scope of production, including but not limited to management, operation, upkeep and maintenance of the 30 bbl brewhouse, production and packaging schedules, all aspects of production including cellaring, packaging, yeast management, maintaining accurate and detailed records, ensuring a clean and sanitary work environment, quality control processes, managing a brewery team, participation in company meetings and initiatives and working with other company department heads.

Essential Functions:

Production Management

  • Management and operation of the production brewery and pilot systems
  • Production & packaging calendars that support sales orders, forecasts and budgets
  • Supervision of all production / packaging steps / SOP’s to ensure they are being executed correctly
  • Ensure equipment and facility is maintained properly and in good working order
  • Sourcing of raw materials to support production requirements
  • Adherence to budget guidelines provided by management
  • Manage Brewery Production Team

  • Scheduling of brewery production teams
  • Adherence to budget guidelines provided by management
  • Recruiting and hiring talented team members as needed
  • Training and development of all production team members
  • Annual / mid-year performance review process
  • Individual development plans
  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control

  • Establish a formal QA/QC system
  • Pro-active quality measures with reaction plans at the immediate operator-level
  • Technical support with a dedicated quality technician for more complex tasks
  • Manage sensory panel and microbiological programs to conduct pre-package release assessments and monitor long-term shelf stability
  • Ensuring all products pass QA/QC guidelines before product is released to distributors or taproom
  • Safety

  • OSHA compliant and working knowledge of requirements

  • Awards / Medals Initiatives

  • Develop and implement an awards strategy
  • Identify annual competitions and style categories to participate in
  • Improve current brands and assist in the development of innovation pipeline
  • Communication

  • Company and department meeting attendance and participation
  • Ongoing work and collaboration with other department heads
  • Participation in sales team activities such as public speaking, distributor meetings, retail events and local guild activities
  • Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to contribute to a successful team
  • Should have experience on a brewhouse of 30bbls or greater
  • More than 5 years’ experience in the brewing industry
  • Extensive experience and understanding of the brewing process, sanitation, yeast health and fermentation, beer transfer clarification and brewery quality control procedures
  • Formal brewing education, and certifications is favorable

    Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 65 pounds and move 175 pounds regularly
  • Must have the ability to regularly stand, walk, use hands, reach, climb, work from heights, stoop, kneel and crouch
  • The ability to work near moving parts and machinery
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, the ability to adjust focus and the ability to see color; either with or without accommodations
  • The ability to work in loud, wet, cold, hot, indoor and outdoor environments frequently
