Review: Vermont Tapped

Vermont Tapped, which is a product from the same company that produces the TreTap line of beverages, is an “enhanced” maple water beverage. The enhancement is maple syrup, which has been combined with maple water, maple flavor, citric acid and carbon dioxide to create a zero-calorie product that drinks like a flavored seltzer. In terms of flavor, it is pretty much a maple syrup-flavored drink, although the aroma and first sip would lead you to believe that it’s going to be sweet and much heavier than it is. While we’re definitely fans of maple flavor, we were slightly disappointed to find that the maple flavor dissipates quickly into a sour note of citric acid. Otherwise, we definitely appreciate what the company is trying to do with the flavor of the product; maple seltzer is certainly unique. On the packaging front, the product utilizes a standard 12 oz. aluminum can that’s ubiquitous with soda and other sparkling beverages. While it’s obvious that the product is carbonated, the flavor of the product is unclear without close examination. Making this more clear will definitely improve it. Otherwise, there’s something that feels generic about the design. Perhaps it’s the large unpainted area or using colors that aren’t overly vibrant. In any event, the shelf presence could definitely be improved. Overall, we like the concept of this product, but the execution feels a bit rough at this point.
