The Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Rhode Island Brewers Guild (RIBG) activities related to communication, legislation, and public relations in partnership with the RIBG Board of Directors. In addition, the Executive Director will focus on building awareness and knowledge of the Association through governmental advocacy, building partnerships and event management. As a part-time position with no paid direct staff, the Executive Director will need to delegate many tasks to competent support (i.e., professionals, committees, volunteers, etc.) but will maintain oversight of these tasks to ensure timely and legally acceptable completion.

The RIBG consists of individual craft brewery owners throughout the state, and the Executive Director will possess outstanding communications skills. He or she will need to develop a clear understanding of the rules and regulations governing all types of alcohol permits in the state in order to effectively guide the association.

Responsibilities for this position fall into four major categories:

Board of Directors

  • Plan, organize and attend regular meeting of BOD and general meetings. Generate meeting agendas and reports with input from stakeholders, take and promptly distribute meeting notes.

  • Update President and BOD regularly on activities.

  • Continuously monitor and communicate legislative activities, imminent or potential legal changes or movement on beer-related topics; work with BOD to identify areas for potential legislative and regulatory opportunities and risks


  • Manage day-to-day Association administration and communication, ensuring all requests receive a prompt and professional response.

  • Manage online presence through content updates to social media and website

  • Set, maintain and communicate annual Association calendar.

  • Manage accounting software and transactions and provide reporting to BOD upon request

Event Management

  • Plan and manage all Association events, either directly or through an events partner with brewers, associate members, and community organizations.

  • On site availability for Ocean State Beer Festival, Newport Craft Beer Festival, Eastern States Exposition

Government Relations Management

  • Serve as primary government relations representative for the association.

  • Actively participate in legislative gatherings of state breweries and legislators in the Capitol, distribute fact sheets for Legislators and prepare and present testimony on behalf of the RIBG.

  • Review and comment when necessary on all rules developed and issued by the state’s Department of Revenue relating to brewery issues.

  • Build alliances with key partner associations as the Rhode Island Hospitality and Tourism Association, the Rhode Island Liquor Store Association, The Rhode Island Wholesalers Association,  the Governor’s Office, Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation, and others.

  • Represent the RIBG at any and all meetings relevant to the craft beer industry in the state.

Position requirements

  • Ability to self motivate in an environment without physical supervision

  • Bachelor’s degree, in business management, political science, or related fields.

  • 2+ years Association Management experience or 5+ years combined business management and/or board experience.

  • Experience with the Rhode Island legislature and its processes.

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communications skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.

  • Proven skills in project and organizational management.

  • Passion for the business of craft beer highly preferred.

  • Strong computer skills required and awareness of the best use of technology to properly enhance the RIBG’s technical presence.

  • Experience in any of the following areas would be helpful: Event planning,Brewery/brew pub management, Public Relations.

  • Availability for key RIBG events throughout the year

  • Ability to dedicate, on average, 20 hours/week to RIBG responsibilities.
