Position Description:

The Controller oversees finance, accounting, and operational cost control activities as they apply to all aspects of the business. In addition to finance, the Controller will be responsible for streamlining and overseeing compliance efforts with regulatory agencies. In order to ensure all aspects of this multifaceted position are performed as expected, measurable metrics will be provided along with regularly scheduled performance reviews. This full-time, permanent position reports to the owners of Hardywood.


Responsibilities:

Accounting & Finance

  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, reconciliations, and chart of accounts maintenance
  • Complete general bookkeeping duties
        o Reconcile chart of accounts vs. inventory control system weekly
        o Correspond with customers and complete collections activities as needed
        o Ensure proper cash management
        o Update and maintain structures of chart of accounts
        o Enter data and maintain records/financial statements
        o Ensure Labor Allocations are properly documented
        o Follow up with past-due A/R and ensure no past-due A/P
        o Meet daily, weekly, and monthly checks and balances requirements
        o Review Loan payment schedules vs equity lines to ensure financial success
        o Oversee Payroll, A/P and A/R
  • Prepare budgets & financial reports
        o Coordinate and direct for all departments the implementation of the budgets and financial forecasts, reporting any variances to the   owner of Hardywood
        o Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements
  • Reconcile accounts and variances
        o Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations and close-out processes, working with CPA as needed
        o Record adjusting journal entries as needed
        o Complete inventory reconciliations, updates, and reporting as needed
        o Ensure compliance with funding agencies’ financial requirements including institutional lenders, governmental agencies, and grant agencies
        o Oversee year-end tax preparations in conjunction with CPA
Business Development
  •  Assist management team in achieving stated business goals
        o Refine and document business processes and accounting policies to achieve stated goals as requested
        o Assist management in all aspects of profitability improvement as requested
        o Ensure increasing levels of customer and stakeholder satisfaction
  • Coordinate and work with professional services partners to ensure business needs are met
        o Interface with third-party service providers including CPAs, financial institutions, and insurance agencies
        o Work with consultants to improve company’s compliance performance and overall internal efficiencies

Compliance & Risk Management

  •  Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Manage and comply with all local, state, and federal government reporting requirements
        o Manage and coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting for compliance
        o Review and complete tasks associated with state sales, use, and meals tax
        o Ensure compliance with federal and state excise taxes
        o Review and complete tasks associated with state and federal excise tax returns
        o Ensure compliance with ABC and TTB regulations
        o Review and complete tasks associated with additional state and federal agencies, industry trade groups, and local organizations to ensure compliance with program regulations and reporting requirements
        o Complete assigned audits to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state agencies
  • Complete other controller duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Business Management, or similar field required
  • Three or more years of progressive accounting/business management experience required
  • Three years of Controller or Accounting Manager experience required
  • Manufacturing and cost accounting experience required
  • CPA and/or MBA degree preferred
  • Excellence in utilizing technology, computers, and current software solutions
  • Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills and presentation skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and to manage a number of complex projects simultaneously
  • Ability to effectively solve problems and lead problem-solving activities
  • Ability to adapt/think on your feet
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, working overtime as needed
