Senior Reporter: Regulation of Cannabis, Beer, Food and Beverage, Inc.

Apply for this Job

Job Description is looking for an experienced reporter who can supply news about regulatory and legal issues affecting the food, beverage, and beer business, particularly the ongoing changes in the laws covering cannabis infused products.

The reporter in this role will cover the key agencies, state and federal legislative committees, industry groups, entrepreneurs and investors whose actions affect and govern the entrepreneurial environment for emerging cannabis businesses, craft brewers, and food and beverage entrepreneurs.

The beat is a new one for and is intended to provide high-impact stories that will be relevant to our three content verticals, BevNET, NOSH, and Brewbound, while also assisting in the development of a new cannabis vertical as well as a high-profile event centered on the intersection of cannabis and food and beverage products. One day you might write about the Farm Bill and whether the FDA will allow interstate sale of CBD-infused products, the next you’ll discuss the forces covering the fight between dairy and almond milk producers or changes to the tax structure covering craft brewers. Every day, you’ll be thinking about the impact of the changing role cannabis-derived ingredients are changing the food, beverage, and beer businesses.

Applicants must have a minimum of four years of experience covering government agencies and/or a specific business vertical at a legitimate newspaper, magazine, or web site. They must be able to develop sources and knowledge of affairs directly affecting the future growth of our audience of craft food, beverage, beer, and cannabis brands.

Note that this is not an enthusiast, review or recipe site. Applicants must be able to work independently to develop sources and stories, be able to think creatively about storytelling in a multimedia environment, and be able to produce a solid mix of breaking news and broader enterprise stories on a consistent, reliable basis.

The reporter will be supervised by the editor-in-chief and will have a variety of responsibilities. In addition to day-to-day editing and writing tasks. the ideal candidate must be personable and outgoing (comfortable on camera and, at times, on stage), with excellent professional networking skills and passion for understanding the business and supplying information to an engaged audience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing a network of contacts and sources to fuel an emerging beat

  • Filing between 4-6 stories per week

  • Screening and posting press release submissions in concert with the BevNET editors

  • Assisting in the planning and execution of a thought leadership conference on the intersection of food, beverage and cannabis

  • Gathering and maintaining a database of sources and story ideas -- and pursuing them so that several are capable of being “hatched” at a given time.

  • Executing same-day news with perspective and engaging sources beyond a single speaker, when possible.

  • Pitching a mix of enterprise and features derived from ongoing stories and new ideas gleaned from sources and research.

  • Proposing potential content for live events and preparing the content and the speakers who are involved in a timely fashion, as well as the announcements and marketing of those segments.

  • Travel to industry trade shows or to companies to perform video or podcast interviews, as needed

  • Journalism (or similar) Bachelor's Degree and at least 4 years of professional journalism experience

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong computer skills, ideally with experience using Wordpress, image editing tools

  • Photography and videography experience a plus

  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail (we use Asana for task management)

  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Ability to pick up new tasks quickly and work with minimal supervision

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience + other standard benefits

  • Casual, results-oriented work environment
