Job Summary:

The Head Brewer at Farmers Brewing Co., LLC (FBCO) is responsible for day-to-day operations of the brewery including, but not limited to, refining and developing recipes, managing brewing staff, recruitment, scheduling, and ensuring a high-quality end product.  The Head Brewer must be able to work with other departments to ensure that only the highest quality beer is released to the public. 

Management

  • Ensure team members have the right tools, knowledge and equipment required to do their jobs effectively and safely
  • Ensure that Standard Operating Procedures are adhered to, improved upon where applicable and trained to for new hires/transfers
  • Assist in recruiting and evaluating quality employees
  • Scheduling employee shifts
  • Establish training program for new and existing employees
  • Following OSHA guidelines and ensuring a safe working environment
  • Employee discipline
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Keep abreast of policies, procedures and current developments in local, state, and federal laws applicable to the production of alcoholic beverages, safe food processing, health standards etc.

     

    Operations
  • Be able to evaluate and adjust for variations in raw materials to produce consistent batches of beer
  • Refine existing recipes and help create new/seasonal recipes
  • Yeast management
  • Fermentation monitoring
  • Ensure operations comply with Company Quality, Sanitation and Safety standards and health and sanitation regulations, including monitoring routine cleaning and maintenance of all equipment, by conducting and documenting regular facilities inspections.
  • Oversee brewing process, ensure production is running efficiently and beer is meeting specific targets
  • Writing and refining SOP's
  • Work with facility manager to create a master equipment parts list and establish parts inventory
  • Troubleshooting equipment
  • Informs Facility Maintenance Manager of all hazardous conditions, repairs, preventive maintenance, and upkeep issues on all warehouse equipment through continuous daily inspections
  • Maintaining a clean facility
  • Defining CIP recipes and schedules for various pieces of equipment
  • Adhering to FDA/Health Dept. guidelines (FSMA)
  • Scaling up beer recipes
  • Work with quality manager to develop and refine lab testing
  • With Owner, oversee the design, operation and improvement of systems that produce the Company’s products and that maintain the facility as a whole
  • Assist with installation of all equipment
  • Assess quality of the beer throughout the brewing process

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    The Head Brewer will coordinate with department heads to ensure their various teams are following standard operating procedures and preventative maintenance duties and will work to continually evaluate and improve all operations. The Head Brewer will help educate and train fellow employees about the specifics of FBCO's beer.

     Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a brewery environment or a great attitude towards learning
  • Experience in managing employees
  • Experience with record keeping
  • Brewery equipment maintenance
  • Formulating and scaling up beer recipes

     

    Special Requirements:
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule: days, nights and or weekends
  • Must have own vehicle, valid Driver's License, current insurance coverage and clean driving record

     

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong communication, administration, and managerial skills to interact with customers, vendors, and coworkers in a professional manner
  • Must possess superior organizational and planning skills.
  • Possess the ability to multi-task and manage stressful circumstances associated with a fast- paced work environment
  • Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
  • Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques
  • Ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Hands-on leadership skills for developing and training a team
  • Superior understanding of quality assurance / quality control and problem-solving skills
  • Create an environment where other employees feel empowered to be able to voice concerns, speak up and admit mistakes, and halt production due to quality concerns
  • Ability to think critically to help FBCO improve processes, procedure, organization, & quality control
  • Desire to learn, grow, and take on increased responsibilities

     

    Equipment, Machines and Software Used:

    This position requires the regular use of a computer, printer, plc's, copier, telephone, scanner, calculator, fork lift, various power tools, hand tools, welders, etc.

     

    Computer Software: Orchestrated Beer, Microsoft Office to include Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Google G-Suite, and chosen Maintenance Software

     

    Physical and Mental Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel, push, pull, reach, crouch, kneel, crawl or bend, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 55 pounds
  • High mental and visual attention required for planning difficult work methods and sequences to obtain size, shape, or physical qualities of product

     

    Environmental Conditions:

    While performing the duties of this position, the worker is exposed to inside environmental conditions, extreme heat, potential for physical injury, exposure to hot fluids, pressurized vessels and transfer lines, strong odors, chemicals, and moving machinery
