QA/QC Specialist/Manager

Garage Brewing Co in Murrieta, CA is looking to add a talented and motivated individual to its team.  The ideal candidate would have experience in a commercial brewery and have professional training in chemistry, biology or equal and a brewing education from a recognized institution.  Exceptionally strong written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable addressing diverse groups.  Interpersonal skills sufficient to be comfortable leading in a team environment with a great deal of interdepartmental coordination.  The main focus of the job is to enhance and further develop our QA/QC disciplines.  As a quality specialist your task will be to ensure that the beer production in the brewery is of exceptional quality thru quality control systems, performing regular products testing and analysis.  The priority goal is to improve brewery operations and looking for ways to reduce costs by analyzing brew logs and yields.  Guide the implementation of best practice control techniques and be responsible for educating management, brewers and other brewery staff on the ways that can improve brewing and packaging functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the brewery complies with appropriate standards
  • Organize and implement quality and yield improvements
  • Process and analyze the microbiology of the beer being produced
  • Make recommendations to management for improvements
  • Encourage industry best practices in the brewery
  • Actively encourage staff to improve best work processes and make them eager to do so
  • Develop key performance indicators and make staff aware of their importance
  • Teach and explain complex topics to production staff in a simple and straight forward way
  • Flavor panel experience with formalized training

Key Skill/Duties:

  • Laboratory process skills and advanced knowledge of lab equipment
  • Strong understanding of the brewing process, wort production, cellaring and packaging best practices
  • Author of QA/QC standard operating procedure
  • Organizing and running sensory evaluation program
  • Collect, organize and maintain a working archive of products
  • Beer program development (aging, fermentation process)
  • Collect and prepare samples for analytical and microbial testing of ingredients
  • Methodologies used in analytical testing to report any product quality issues or concerns to senior management
  • Operate and maintain lab equipment
  • Skillful with instrument calibration and maintain control charts to ensure instruments are performing properly
  • Troubleshooting, problem solving and anticipating problems
  • Coordinating and administering sensory analysis of ingredients for in-process beers
  • Develop and maintain SOP standards for all processes, ingredients and actions in brewing, primary fermentation, aging, blending, adding secondary ingredients and packaging to ensure the highest quality of our beer
  • Develop all SOP and best practices for lab duties with equipment and managing the lab
  • Extensive knowledge of chemical use for safe handling and storage
  • Keep OSHA, MSDS and other practices paperwork up to date
  • Prioritize work in a fast-paced environment to limit down time and keep operations moving
  • COGS, inventory management, operating costs review production data to improve process efficiency
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and accuracy
  • Forecasting yeast requirements, including in-house propagation management
  • Maintain brewing and cellaring schedules
  • Proficient with basic computer applications
  • ERP experience with Vicinity Brewing is a plus

Physical Requirements

  • Performance duties of this job include regularly being required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk, hear and smell
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs
  • Ability to frequently reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and climb.
  • Mist be able to participate in organoleptic assessment of beers
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus

This is a full-time position 40+hrs/week.  Salary commensurate with experience to 60K.  Medical, monthly stipend, beer allowance.  Work week is Mon-Fri 7am-3:30pm with occasional extra hours.
