Craft coffee roaster in Jack London Square (Oakland) is looking for a Purchasing Manager to join our team. This position is responsible for sourcing, negotiating and purchasing of most materials and services, maintaining sustainable levels of inventory, business partnering with vendors and handling a purchasing budget of $4+ million per year.
The successful candidate is a well-versed team member communicating daily with the entire Operations Team, Customer Service Team, Sales Team, Retail Team and Finance Team. A successful candidate will be managing on site and off site inventories and consumables. A successful candidate will not only use the Microsoft Great Plains to issue purchase orders and manage inventory levels, they will also help with the upkeep of the system and educate others in proper usage and item creation/set up. A successful candidate is extremely responsive to the company’s ever changing needs, while making sound financial decisions. The successful candidate will likely spend equal amounts of time in warehouse and at their desk.
Desired Skills and Experience
Strong math, analytical and problem solving skills – ability to analyze inventory levels, projected usage, analyze past sales trends or production usage data and develop purchasing decisions. Ability to develop vendor performance criteria, analyze vendor performance and effect changes.
Proven vendor relationship and negotiating skills – extensive knowledge of vendors, especially in the food and beverage manufacturing industry. Must possess tact, diplomacy and firmness in vendor negotiations.
Management skills – ability to work independently with proven decision-making skills, strong initiative and work ethics to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines while maintaining the company’s objectives. Must be able to work with the warehouse and production employees to ensure proper receiving and warehousing practices are being followed.
Strong interpersonal skills – possess panache, able to build collaborative relationships with all vendors and staff levels and command accordingly.
Communication skills – ability to communicate ideas and recommendations clearly and succinctly both verbally and in writing.
Adaptability/Flexibility – ability to react quickly to changing requirements from internal and external conditions, and maintain good communication with all parties involved.
System skills – proficient in electronic purchasing and inventory systems and MS Office (i.e., Excel, Word, Outlook). Strong Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics/Great Plains and SalesPad is required.
Warehouse skills – ability to work in a warehouse setting, i.e., climbing ladders, counting inventory daily, weekly, monthly, and lifting up to 45 lbs. Forklift driving certification a plus and but not required. Must be able to train warehouse staff on proper receiving procedures and processing of supporting documents to support the purchasing work flow. Must possess a hands on approach to ensure items are received, put away, FIFO’d, etc. Good warehousing practices are essential for this role and the purchaser must be an integral part of this team/work flow.
· At least 5-10 years’ progressive experience in purchasing, warehousing, and inventory.
· Candidate must possess strong inter-personal relationships negotiating and maintaining relationships with vendors, and working with all levels in an organization.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills is a must.
· Experience in food and beverage manufacturing is preferred. BS/BA degree required.
· Due to magnitude of inventories managed, must be an extremely organized worker, capable of documenting, through analytical skills, basis for decisions and determining quantity and timing of deliveries.
· Must be able to analyze production work orders/sales orders and stay in front of ever changing production demands.
